Read with interest your review of The Persistence and agree it sounds like an interesting use of the tech, but all it did was convince me that I was right never to buy a PlayStation VR. The reason? A lot of the best games are horror games and Im too much of a coward.
Resident Evil 7 sounds amazing, and Capcom seem to have been the only big publisher to step up and make an effort with VR, but I know theres no way Id be able to play it. The Resident Evil games, and other survival horrors, are too scary for me as it is so Id have no chance with VR. And thats not even starting on the horrific-sounding Farpoint…
I would ask why so many VR games are horror games but I suppose the answers pretty obvious: VR owners are early adaptors and they tend to be hardcore gamers. And so not only are they probably going to like horror games more but being scared is an obvious use for the VR that makes it better than a normal game (plus horror games are usually quite slow paced).
I think Ill have to wait till they go mainstream, not because I dont want to spend the money but because I want a better percentage of the games to be non-scary.

Waste of a game
So have you seen that the new nightclub DLC has brought in champagne in GTA Online that costs $150,000 of in-game money. As far as I know it doesnt do anything but get you drunk (just like the real thing) but unlike the real thing you dont, you know, get to drink anything.
That amount is more than the cost of some high-end cars in the game so I guess its a status thing. Im not sure if the bottle magically always stays full or something but either way this is going to tempt so many people – your so-called whales – to part with real money I almost feel Rockstar should be stopped.
Not that I think its particularly their fault but so many people cant avoid temptation and want to show off online (to who though? Thats what I always think) that they are just going to be wasting their money on literally nothing.

First impulses
I know its a well-known phenomenon but it always amazes me how many gamers are so backwards-looking. I always thought of gaming as always pushing forward, but some people are so obsessed with the past its no wonder that we get so many sequels so often.
Like, someone writes in about wanting an ultimate Harry Potter and then multiple people write in about how they should be like the lame EA games or some 12-year-old Rockstar game. Is that really the limits of your imagination? You get to dream up the perfect game with an infinite budget and the first idea that comes into your head is a remake of an 11-year-old game that has a 63 on Metacritic (and that was by far the best of EAs games).
And then that guy who was raving about finally getting an Xbox One and the big selling point for him was… being able to play old Xbox 360 games on it. I mean, really. Why is it that the first thing so many people think of when buying a new console how they can play old games on it?
Im sorry, I havent mentioned anyones names on purpose because I dont want to have a go at them personally but why is this attitude so common? Why isnt everyone just say saying we should have something new and modern that weve never seen before?

Pretty good
I think one of the overlooked secrets to Fortnites success is that its actually very difficult to dislike. Like the reader the other day, once you actually play it you find out that its a pretty decent game. Add to the fact that its free and the microtransactions arent too in your face and I think youd be hard pressed to find anything actively wrong with it.
The only complaints Ive heard are from people that are sick of it being talked about and how its everywhere at the moment. But the game itself? Its pretty good. Its also not especially violent and no more or less addictive than any other game.
Okay, there are a lot of shooters that are better to play but its not as if Fortnite is bad. Its just pretty good to excellent in every area and thats rare. I dont see anything else beating it for a long time.

The opposite of indie
I would really like a small indie developer to do another game in the Strike series.
Desert Strike was just fantastic, completed that many, many times on the Mega Drive.
Jungle Strike was a worthy sequel. I only bought and played Soviet Strike for the Mega Drive a couple of years ago but it was still quite good.
If I remember correctly I think there was a Nuclear Strike on the PS1? Havent tried that.

PS: Stealthreaper – I agree, they are a necessity, first world problems I suppose.
PPS: Mr J Pilkington – No I dont see, straight over my head.
GC: You do know the Strike franchise belongs to EA? Also, you missed out Urban Strike.
Unbalanced universe
So now its looking increasingly likely that both Avengers and whatever Rocksteadys working on (very likely a Justice League game) are going to be microtransaction-filled games as a service titles. How sad that weve waited so long for superhero games that arent Spider-Man or Batman and this is what we get.
I know I might be getting ahead of myself here a bit but a multiplayer game where everyone has to be balanced just seems to go against the whole nature of superhero games. Its okay in a fighting game where theres no real story. But theres no way that Winter Soldier should be going toe-to-toe with the Hulk or Green Arrow with Wonder Woman.
Even if they make it so youre fighting only the bad guys how is Hawkeye going to take down Thanos or Black Widow stand a chance against Darksied? I dont see how any of these things are going to make sense without completely nerfing some characters and beefing up others. Taking Kryptonite pills might have been an acceptable handwave in Injustice but I wanted a proper story game, not a one-size-fits-all loot box fest.

Summer jam
Am I the only one thats really looking forwards to Guacamelee 2? It may be a particularly bad summer drought, in both senses of the word, but I cant wait until August 21. The first one was a hidden gem with me that I got for free and almost didnt even bother downloading.
But I did and absolutely loved it. It was also my first Metroidvania and although Ive gone on to play lots more since I still think its the best. Cannot wait!

GC: Hmm… thats the first day of Gamescom. Not the ideal launch date.

Too many games
Given the recent revelations about the summer games drought actually making sense if you live in any country where it actually gets hot in the summer (which apparently even includes us now) maybe its time that publishers start looking at the beginning of the year, which unless youre in Australia is a lot more suitable time to be releasing games.
You can often get through the first three months of the year and virtually nothing is released, which seems mad considering thats the coldest, most miserable time of the year when almost everyones likely to be stuck inside.
But then again next year is actually quite busy for those months, so either thats just an anomaly or publishers have learnt. So does that mean theres… just too many games being released? I agree that second string games like Shadow Of The Tomb Raider and Darksiders III are doomed to failure but when should they come out? Maybe theres just no place for those kind of games anymore? Its just triple-A or indie, the two extremes?
I have no answers but surely there must be a better one than just throwing them out there and hoping for the best?

Ive just seen that Ys: Memories Of Celceta is now available for PC on Steam. I think its a great little game.

GC: Most of the modern Ys games are, its an underrated series.
OMG, I didnt realise until now that they actually probably will call it Xbox Two, because theres… two of them! Fission Mailed!

This weeks Hot Topic
The subject for this weekends Inbox was suggested by reader Wormwood and asks how often do you play video games?
On average, how many hours a week do you play games? Is it a fairly regular pattern and are there particular days or times you almost always play? Do you play roughly the same amount all the time or is it entirely dependent on what new games you have or some other factor, such as the weather? What formats do you play on and does your total include mobile games?
Do you play more or less now than in previous years and do you worry that its too much (or too little)? If it was possible, how long would you ideally play for each day or week?
