EA Sports FIFA fans have had a strange old day.
First came the surprising news that Juventus will no longer be represented in the upcoming new FIFA 20 game coming this September.
Why? Because the Italian club has been snapped up by Konami for an exclusive partnership with PES 2020.
PES 20 effectively have the rights to show the clubs name, crest, kit and stadium exclusively in their upcoming release.
Meanwhile, Juventus will still feature in EA Sports next game, but under a new name. if it wasn't strange enough already, the Serie A champions will now go by the name Piemonte Calcio in the new FIFA 20 game.
According to the Daily Star Sport team, the new name is based on Piemonte FC, a football club based in Turin that dissolved at the start of the First World War.
If you're curious how this impacts the wider game, especially when you effectively remove one of the biggest teams in the whole world, filled with international superstars, don't fret.
EA Sports Global Franchise Lead, Corey Andress has pointed fans to a new blogpost which carefully explains how the end of the partnership between EA SPORTS and Juventus Football Club will impact the game.
You can find all that info, on the Piemonte Calcio link.
Ok so that's the bad news. Thankfully, there's a silver lining for FIFA 20 fans, as EA Sports have now announced a new partnership with the reigning Champions League holders, Liverpool.
As part of the partnership, EA SPORTS will work with the 2018-19 UEFA Champions League winners to produce "Liverpool FC-specific content for fans to enjoy globally across the clubs social channels."
So, instagram posts and the like. Probably. We imagine there's more to it, but it's intentionally vague and short of picture of the Liverpool FC players taking part in a launch day trailer and some pictures for new TOTW announcements, it's hard to know what it means for the time being.
It's also not incredibly surprising. Liverpool have just ended their partnership with Konami and PES this year, and Peter Moore, former head of EA left some years back to join Liverpool FC as CEO.
He also happened to be a massive Liverpool fan, so it seems like a match made in heaven. Or at least, Anfield.
Speaking about the new deal, Samantha Ebelthite, UK&I Country Manager, Electronic Arts, commented:
