Call Of Duty: WWII is UK Xmas number one, as PUBG on Xbox One passes 1 million sales
Call Of Duty: WWII – the number one game for Christmas

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds took just 48 hours to sell over 1 million copies, as Call Of Duty becomes the number one retail game at Christmas.

Call Of Duty has been officially named as the UK Christmas number one for 2017, which is no surprise as it’s been sitting at the top spot now for seven weeks in a row.

It’s also the fourth year in a row that the game has been the all formats number one, equalling the record of EA’s FIFA series. Both franchises also claim eight non-consecutive number ones each.

But those results only take account of retail sales, not digital, where it’s been revealed that PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (aka PUBG) has been downloaded over 1 million times in just 48 hours.

The game is being given away free with the Xbox One X in many regions, but even so it’s a huge achievement. Even if it’s not a surprising one given the success of the PC version.

There’s a retail version of the game, labelled the ‘Game Preview Edition’, and that managed to get to number two in the individual formats chart. Which means that overall PUBG may well have rivalled Call Of Duty for the top spot, despite being a format exclusive.

Elsewhere in the retail charts, Chart-Track reports that Star Wars: Battlefront II saw a surge in sales following the release of the new movie. Although the last report was that the game has sold 2.5 million less than expected, thanks to the controversy over its loot box system.

Assassin’s Creed Origins also saw a last minute surge in sales, as did WWE 2K18 thanks to the belated release of its Switch version.

There was also one new entry in the charts this week, with Okami HD sneaking in at number 37 in the all formats, with the PlayStation 4 version reaching number 35 in individual formats charts. Which almost seems like a Christmas miracle in itself.
