Bill Turnbull fought back the tears as he spoke for the first time about his cancer diagnosis.

The former breakfast news host told his story at the end of Channel 4’s special episode for Great British Bake Off in which they hoped to raise money for Stand Up 2 Cancer for which Bill had participated in.

He discovered his diagnosis during filming.

As he spoke about his marriage to his wife – ‘that I consider to be the best thing I’ve ever done’ – he choked up and ended up laughing to himself as he attempted to hold back to the emotions.

‘It’s like a dark cloud comes down, it’s a difficult moment,’ he said of the diagnosis which came after putting his symptons down to older age. He had not been to see his GP for four years, and revealed that he was ‘not aware something was going rather wrong inside me’.

‘The first days of diagnosis are really horrible, probably the worst days of my life,’ he added.

Bill is now on a course of chemotherapy which he undergoes once every three weeks, and the video showed him in hospital receiving treatment.

He was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer, and has since then had keyhole kidney operations, hormone injections and chemo sessions.

However the disease has already spread to his leg bones, hips, pelvis and ribs.

‘If I’d had a test a few years ago we would have diagnosed it earlier and knocked it on the head earlier and my survival possibilities would be a lot better,’ he said encouraging men everywhere to get themselves checked.

‘I’ve had an amazing life. I’ve been incredibly lucky. If you know that your time is limited, you appreciate so much more the world around you, and particularly the love of my family,’ he ended the message.
