HUD Secretary Ben Carson was asked by WMALs Larry OConnor Wednesday what he thought of rapper Kanye Wests recent embrace of President Trump.

“Part of what made you so compelling is you really wanted to reach out to people who hadnt been represented by the Republican Party in the past,” OConnor said. “And today weve got Kanye West tweeting out a picture of himself wearing a Make America Great Again hat and the president responding on Twitter. I mean, this is Kanye, Secretary Carson. What do you make of this?”

Carson responded by praising West and the “courage” it takes to “go against the grain” instead of living a lie so people “think youre wonderful.”

“Well, you know I am thrilled to see someone like him have the courage, because it takes a lot of courage to go against the grain, and to have people saying horrible things about you when you could just change it a little bit and everybody would think youre wonderful, and people get seduced by that,” said Carson. “But the fact of the matter is, when you look down through history, great people seldom are appreciated during the time when theyre alive. Its only later on. But I appreciate the fact that hes willing to come out and take that stand.”

And the feeling is apparently mutual. Back in 2015, West actually expressed support for Carson in his presidential bid.

The HUD secretary finished by tying in Wests stand with his agencys mission to “empower people” instead of simply creating programs and trying to get people into them.
