Actress Seyi Omooba is suing for religious discrimination after she was dropped from The Color Purple for citing an anti-gay Bible passage.

It all came to a head when she was cast back in March to play the role of Celie, a bisexual character, in The Color Purple at the Birmingham Hippodrome between 16 and 20 July.

But just days after the announcement, a previous tweet of the young stars came to light, in which she wrote: I do not believe you can be born gay and I do not believe homosexuality is right.

She also referenced Bible passage 1 Corinthians 6:9-11, which states: Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who have sex with men, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor slanderers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

After public backlash, Leicesters Curve and Birmingham Hippodrome urged Seyi to publicly apologise and take down her Facebook post.

But she refused.

Then came a swift joint statement from Leicesters Curve and Birmingham Hippodrome.

It read: The comments made by Seyi in that post have caused significant and widely expressed concerns both on social media and in the wider press.

Following careful reflection it has been decided that Seyi will no longer be involved with the production.

As a result, she was dropped from her role and by her agents as well.

And now the young actress is suing the Curve Theatre in Leicester and her former agents, Michael Garrett Associates, for a breach of contract.

Seyi told The Mail on Sunday: I just quoted what the Bible says about homosexuality, the need for repentance, but ultimately Gods love for all humanity. I stand by what I wrote, but had I known that it would have come to this, I would have set my account to the privacy mode.
