LONDON — A senior U.K. cabinet minister has “grave, very deep concerns” about Chinese company Huaweis equipment being used on Britains 5G network.
Defense Secretary Gavin Williamson told The Times newspaper in an interview published Thursday that Huaweis involvement should be looked at “closely.”
“Weve got to look at what partners such as Australia and the U.S. are doing in order to ensure that they have the maximum security of that 5G network and weve got to recognize the fact, as has been recently exposed, that the Chinese state does sometimes act in a malign way,” he said in the interview.
It comes after the head of the MI6 intelligence service Alex Younger said the U.K. needed to “decide the extent to which we are going to be comfortable with Chinese ownership of these technologies.”
Reuters reported Thursday that U.S. President Donald Trump is considering an executive order that would bar U.S. companies from using telecommunications equipment made by Chinas Huawei and ZTE.
