The world of virtual reality gaming is off to a positive start to the new year, as a new Viva headset and wireless adapter is revealed.

A new premium version of the HTC Vive headset has just been revealed, which will bring with it a higher resolution display and integrated headphones.
The Vive, which was designed in collaboration with Steam creators Valve, is already the most high tech (and expensive) of the three major VR headsets but the new Pro version will increase the resolution from a 2160 x 1200 display to 2880 x 1600.
That’s a pixel count increase of 78%, with the PPI (pixels per inch) increasing by 37% to 615. The Pro version will be out this year, but there’s no indication yet of a price.
Unveiled at the same time is a new wireless adapter that will work with both versions of the headset. It’ll be out this autumn and should offer a major improvement to the VR experience, given how thick and unwieldy the collection of cables is that currently protrude from the headset.
Given the resolution is one of the most important elements of any VR headset it’s inevitable that we’ll see similar ‘Pro’ versions of the Oculus Rift and PlayStation VR at some point, but the news today from Sony is about software rather than hardware.

Sony expect to release around 130 new PlayStation VR games by the end of 2018, which is almost twice as many as last year.
The prediction was made in a Japanese interview translated by Siliconera, and is a result of the PlayStation VR hitting sales of 2 million.
The PlayStation VR is already more successful than either of the two PC headsets, and it’s not just the cheaper price that’s made it a success but the steady stream of new games.
