It is said to be the fastest growing language in the UK – and has even had a Hollywood film made about it.
Now with more than 2,800 symbols, the popularity of the emoji shows no sign of slowing down as fans around the globe mark World Emoji Day.
In its sixth year, 17 July was chosen as the date for the annual event because it's displayed on the calendar emoji .
Keith Broni, who has hired as the world's first emoji translator by language services firm Guildhawk, told Sky News the symbols appeared "here to stay".
"If we're still typing into our digital devices, our mobiles and tablets, the emoji keyboard is going to be part of our lives," he said.
