Xbox One Games Update: Good and bad news for Xbox One X and Xbox 360 owners (Pic: Microsoft)

Microsoft's Xbox E3 2019 Briefing was a mixed bag. For once the console giant didn't have to compete with PlayStation for headlines, who in previous years have cast a large shadow over pretty much anything Xbox had to show.

But even then, this years briefing fell flat.

The new combat game from Ninja Theory, Bleeding Edge, looks really interesting but they showed very little. Halo Infinite, still appears impressive, remarkable in fact; but still only in CGI trailers.

Gears 5, out in three months, showed surprisingly nothing of the main campaign, instead opting to show a new mode that will primarily please the games core fanbase who will no doubt buy the game regardless.

Amazingly, the entire Xbox briefing was overshadowed by a new trailer for Cyberpunk 2077 (a game also coming to PS4) which shocked viewers by revealing it would star Keanu Reeves.

Microsoft's biggest 'wins' were reserved for an improved Xbox Game Pass subscription and the promise of a new Xbox Scarlett console coming "next holiday".

Great news for consumers delivered in an email, but not on a stage in front of millions watching around the globe.

Behind the scenes though, Microsoft made another announcement which may have been lost in the E3 noise. But one still worth shouting about, especially for ardent Xbox One console users.

Namely, the console maker announced a slew of new backwards compatible original Xbox and Xbox 360 games.

On top of this, there was also a few new Xbox One X enhancements for some existing backwards compatible titles too.

However, whilst this announcement was good news for Xbox One owners, it was also tinged with some bad news (ish) to follow up. Well sort of bad news depending out whether you're a half glass full kinda person.

"After adding more than 600 titles to the Backward Compatibility catalog, were now setting our sights on whats next for the future of compatibility," Microsoft said.

"Weve listened closely to community feedback and respect the game libraries youve built throughout the last 18 years. Thats why were taking our work a step further and announced this week that thousands of games from all four generations will be playable on Project Scarlett.

So far, that's good news for anyone planning to buy Xbox Scarlett down the line, but here comes the bad news for Xbox One users:

"As such, we have now shifted our focus to help make the games you love playing on Xbox One compatible with future Xbox hardware," continue the blog post.

"After this week, we have no plans to add additional Original Xbox or Xbox 360 titles to the catalog on Xbox One, but were excited to continue our work on Xbox compatibility across platforms and devices, which remains a top priority."

"Today, were thrilled to bring you a final collection of Original Xbox classics, Xbox 360 fan-favorites and Xbox One X Enhanced updates as a token of appreciation to our fans for their support."

So there you have it, don't expect to see anymore backwards compatible games or enhancements for a long time.
