GameCentral readers discuss the games theyre most looking forward to for the rest of the year, from Smash Bros. to Fallout 76.
With Gamescom just finished almost every video game that will be out for Christmas has been announced and shown to the public. So we wanted to know what youre most interested in and which you might have already pre-ordered.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Red Dead Redemption II was by far the most popular but there was also a lot of interest in everything from Battlefield V to Shadow Of The Tomb Raider.
No spoilers
The four games I want to get this year are: Red Dead Redemption II, which I have already pre-ordered for Xbox One X, which Im sure going by Rockstars previous games will be good (I hope anyway). I havent watched the last two trailers of the game as I want to go in and be surprised, I have done this with a lot of games that I get excited about and dont want to spoil the game before I have played it. I did this with Super Mario Odyssey and Zelda: Breath Of The Wild.
I also want to get Life Is Strange 2 day one as I enjoyed 1 and the prequel and I know gameplay is the thing that most matters, but I do like a game with a good story. Im a big fan of the Uncharted games and enjoyed the reboot 2013 Tomb Raider game. I did enjoy Rise Of The Tomb Raider but I thought
the previous game was better so I will want to get Shadow Of The Tomb Raider too.
I would like to play Spider-Man if it reviews well, but I am going to wait for the reviews from GameCentral and Edge to see if it is worth getting. I really enjoyed the Batman: Arkham games and I hoping Spider-Man will be another high quality superhero game.

Main two
This is a question Ive been pondering a lot in the last few weeks, because theres so much coming out and while I have more disposable cash than I have in a while now I have far less time. I hate having a backlog so Im really not sure what Ill be getting. Red Dead Redemption II is a given, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but everything else is going to have to fight for its place on my Christmas list.
Im not sold on Fallout 76 or Shadow Of The Tomb Raider, both of which seem very unnecessary cash grabs. The lack of multiplayer puts me off Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4 and Battlefield V just seems to be Battlefield 1 with slightly different graphics.
I do fancy the Spider-Man game though and I actually became quite intrigued by Ubisofts Starlink game after GCs E3 preview so Ill keep an eye on that. To be honest I probably wont get any but my main two without seeing the reviews first, but Ill be shocked if they arent received well.

Time limit
When 2019 rolls around I will have played a grand total of four games this year, two of which are still to come.
I started off this year with Resident Evil 7, truly terrifying. Until I got stuck. Boss fight with the dad fairly early on when he kicks you off a platform into a pit and you both get chainsaws. Ive tried and tried but I cannot beat him.
Next came God Of War, utterly superb. I think Im probably done with it, story is finished, two Valkyries left, a load of stuff in Niflheim but I doubt Ill get too much more completed.
So next is Shadow Of The Tomb Raider, I enjoyed the last two. so expecting something pretty similar from this one. Ill get that on release day which gives me a mere six weeks until Read Dead Redemption II comes out. Which is going to be a little tight considering Ive spent six months finishing God Of War.
The days of four-hour sessions a long gone but Im very happy with my gaming choices this year.

No waiting
As always there are quite a lot of games Im interested in during the run up to Christmas, I just got my favourite games ever in HD in Shenmue I & II and will be picking up Yakuza Kiwami 2 next week. These where always top of my list and couldnt be left until the festive period.
The games Im intending to get this side of Christmas are Shadow Of The Tomb Raider. I really enjoyed the first two games and I am looking forward to finding out what happens next.
Im also after Spider-Man, which I have confidence will be brilliant, and Team Sonic Racing as I loved Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed and dont have a Nintendo console that can play Mario Kart 8 (yet…).
Hopefully there will be news of the MediEvil remaster soon as that would be on the list and Im interested in Call Of Cthulu as well, not to mention having Red Dead Redemption II on pre-order, which I believe will be a popular mention.

Backlog issues
With the winter drawing in, and the summer game drought coming to an end, there are a few titles that Im interested in this Christmas. Ive only pre-ordered one game so far, and thats Red Dead Redemption II, which I did well over a year ago. It looks amazing from the trailers they have released and it could well be game of the year material. Theres still no news on what the multiplayer component will be like, but with the success of GTA V Online Im sure it will be pretty substantial.
Im a big fan of the Battlefield series, and Battlefield V does look pretty decent, with a lot more destructibility, which has been sadly lacking since Bad Company 2. The new Battle Royale mode should also be an interesting addition to the franchise. So this looks like another game I shall either buy or ask for as a Christmas present.
The new Spider-Man game from Insomniac also looks great, but Im going to wait for reviews before deciding on whether to make a purchase or not, as a lot of the footage Ive seen has been pre-scripted set pieces and quick time events, and I want to make sure there is more gameplay to it.
Fallout 76 also could be great, but is another Id like to wait for reviews before jumping in. I have really enjoyed the Fallout series, but I dont see how it will work with a vast amount of players playing and no doubt some causing grief. If they crack that though, it could be a fantastic co-op experience with friends.
There are a few other notable mentions that I may get further down the line. Strange Brigade looks like it could be a fun co-op experience. Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Just Cause 4, and Hitman 2 are other games I like the look of but I have yet to play Rise Of The Tomb Raider or Just Cause 3, and only got to Sapienza in the last Hitman, so it would probably be best if I played through them first. That pesky backlog just seems to grow and grow!

New year purchase
I know its a busy Christmas this year but to me theres not really that much of interest. Ive never been much of a fan of Rockstars stuff, Smash Bros. is Nintendos least interesting franchise (in my opinion of course), and everything else just seems like, well… the sort of mass market junk food gaming you always get at that time of the year.
For me its next spring thats much more exciting, with the likes of Resident Evil 2, Anthem, Devil May Cry 5, Metro: Exodus, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Im very interested in all of these and will likely get them all, depending on how theyre received.
I wasnt too interested in Anthem but your excellent Gamescom interview convinced me it was worth paying attention and I like how the guy you were talking to was so honest. Obviously, you did Devil My Cry 5 as well but did you manage to get interviews for any of the others?
Grackle
GC: Yes, weve got interviews coming for all of those as well.

I think theres four games due out that are the big autumnal/end of year titles for me:
Spider-Man – its been a while since Ive bothered with any Spider-Man game, so this has that going for it even before you factor in that it looks pretty amazing. I really like that theyre focusing on newer villains like Mr Negative too.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – I was a bit tepid on this with the E3 reveal, but the last Direct has me really stoked for it now. Its still Smash Bros., theyre not going to reinvent the wheel, but theyre at least giving it some nice alloys and those fancy coloured brake calipers, so its looking to be one of the best wheels ever.
Red Dead Redemption II – The first Redemption is still possibly my favourite game of all time, so Ive got high hopes for this. The gameplay reveal trailer looked good, though I do worry some of the newer realism features, like the horse bonding, might get a bit tiresome. And I cant believe theyve included a your friends will invite you to go play horseshoes feature as though theyve completely forgotten how everyone hated that in GTA IV.
Super Mario Party – This is both the biggest unknown quantity and yet also the safest of the bunch, I think. Nintendo didnt show off a huge amount of it at E3, but I dont think they really needed to beyond demonstrating that theyd ditched the stupid car thing and gone back to basics. What little Ive seen of it looks great and perfect for the local co-op friendly Switch. I hope they add a few more characters though (even as DLC) – itd be nice to get to play as Pauline.
The only problem I have is that I dont actually have a PlayStation 4 at the moment, so Ill need to remedy that soon. Usually, I dont think theres much point pre-ordering games, especially big releases, but Ive done so for both the Switch games. Nintendo games do actually have a risk of selling out on release. I got burnt on that for Radiant Historia earlier in the year and Octopath Traveller is still out of stock most places physically.
