Two men who died after a road rage fight in northern California have been identified by authorities.

Jose Rodriguez-Carrasco allegedly chased and beat 39-year-old Jason Dykes after their cars collided early on Sunday morning on Interstate 5 near Sacramento.

Witnesses told police Mr Rodriguez-Carrasco used a bat or pipe to attack Mr Dykes, who died after suffering apparent blunt force trauma.

Mr Rodriguez-Carrasco reportedly continued to hit other vehicles with the weapon, before he was fatally struck by a passing vehicle.

The men, who were pronounced dead at the scene, were identified by the Sacramento County Coroner's Office.

After the collision, the two men drove further north before stopping near Del Paso Road, where they got out of their vehicles and began fighting, California Highway Patrol spokesman Mike Zerfas said.

"It escalated from a traffic collision to a fight to a homicide," he added.

Mr Dykes was a father and was born and raised in Sacramento, CBS Sacramento reported.

Kevin Johnson, one of his neighbours, told the channel he could not understand what has happened.

He said: "I don't get it, I don't get it. It only takes one second of being too mad for anybody.

"My little cousin came over and said, 'hey did you hear that Jason got murdered?'" said Mr Johnson.
