PS4 Update 6.02 System download TODAY: New Sony PlayStation update – heres what it does (Pic: SONY)

Sony's newest PS4 firmware update is now available and unfortunately, if you're hoping for some big new features since the rather disappointing 6.00 update, then we've some bad news for you.

Today's update is for patch 6.02 and as per the usual, Sony say this latest update has been released to 'improve system performance'.

That's literally the only clues based on Sony's latest patch notes.

However, it's possible that whilst the above sounds disappointing, that the update could in fact be crucial to the PS4, because we're assuming (hoping) that it fixes the message vulnerability that started corrupting people's PS4 units at the weekend.

According to the company, receiving a certain message on PS4 was allegedly leaving players unable to use their console without a factory reset.

At the time, the advice from PlayStation Support was to delete the message on mobile and boot their consoles into safe mode, but many players were also advising others to change their message settings in response to this new hack.

"PSA: Set your messages to "Friends Only" on your PlayStation 4 for now as there are glitched messages going around that will brick your console and force you to factory reset" reads one tweet from @FortniteIntel

The top thread of the PS4 Reddit was also rife with complaints of people receiving this message.

Sony eventually released a statement to VG247, telling users:

“We are aware of the situation and are planning a system software update to resolve this problem."

We suspect this update, could be to resolve the problems.

Though the Patch Notes give nothing away, we're hoping Sony do put our an alert to let players know they can tweak their settings back to how they were before the hack started doing the rounds.

Likewise, if there are any secret changes to the console on top of what we've already mentioned, we imagine we'll learn soon enough by players booting up their PS4 consoles.

As always, PlayStation advises players to "always update your PS4 system to the latest version of the system software," which they explain will allow you to "enjoy additional features, improved usability and enhanced security."

The last major PS4 patch was released at the start of March and introduced a whole assortment of new features.

Although, we suspect that whilst the 6.0 Update contained no big new features, a lot of groundwork related to PSN name changes might have been hidden within that particular patch.
