North Korea's state media has described the talks between Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump as part of a "changed era" – the secretive state's first comment on the momentous summit.

The KCNA news agency said the two leaders will exchange "wide-ranging and profound views" during their meeting at the five-star Capella Hotel on Sentosa Island.

It reported that the discussions are going to focus on "the issue of building a permanent and durable peacekeeping mechanism on the Korean peninsula, the issue of realising the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula, and other issues of mutual concern".

The summit is being held "under the great attention and expectation of the whole world", KCNA added.

Its reference to denuclearisation of the peninsula has historically meant it wants the US to remove its "nuclear umbrella" protecting South Korea and Japan – a proposal that could make these countries nervous.

KCNA's coverage also highlighted Mr Kim's late-night stroll in Singapore, and said the leader was impressed by a "nocturnal bird's eye view" from the top of the Marina Bay Sands hotel, where a SkyPark links three 55-storey towers.

Its report added: "He said Singapore is clean and beautiful and every building is stylish as he heard of in the past, adding he is going to learn a lot from the good knowledge and experience of Singapore in various fields in the future."

In the past, North Koreans have been left largely in the dark about the momentous and potentially life-changing events taking place outside of their isolated nation.

Before now, TV stations and newspapers in Pyongyang have only put out their first reports after events have finished – but by North Korea's standards, the announcement that Mr Kim was in Singapore came much earlier than usual.
