A patent with a new bendable Joy-Con and two bendable Joy-Cons attached to a Nintendo Switch

Are the Joy-Cons really going to be redesigned?

A new patent has been discovered that might make playing the Nintendo Switch in handheld more comfortable.

A new patent filed in Japan suggests that Nintendo is looking to make the Nintendo Switch more comfortable to use in handheld mode, with a strange new change to the way Joy-Cons work.

As you can see from the image above, as discovered by Polygon, the top third of the Joy-Con will now bend at an angle. How the controllers slot into the Nintendo Switch hasnt changed though, as the flat edge continues on even where the controller bends.

The patent suggests Nintendo is going for a more ergonomic design, as the Joy-Cons can still be flattened back to their original shape when needed. Moreso, when you are playing a two-player title such as Diablo III or Mario Kart 8, having the flatter controller will feel more comfortable.

A solution to a problem nobody knew existed

From the image above, you can see they are even looking into having a curve at the bottom of the Joy-Cons, again presumably for comfort.

It does seem an odd thing to change though as there have been no major complaints about the Joy-Con or handheld mode being unusually uncomfortable, and all those extra joints only create more things to potentially go wrong.

It also raises the issue of the new Switch Lite not working in the same way and whether they can still fit things like HD Rumble into the new bendy Joy-Cons.
