GTA 6 is one of the most hotly anticipated games of the moment.
The title, which will follow up on the events of GTA5, is likely being worked on right now – Rockstar and Rockstar North released Red Dead Redemption 2 late last year, and since then we imagine development on the next satirical sandbox has accelerated significantly.
But when are we going to see it launch? Despite a lot of chatter about the game coming to PS5 and Xbox Scarlett sooner rather than later (around the release date of the consoles towards the end of 2020), looking at previous patterns suggests that we may have to wait a little longer.
(In)famous GTA dataminer Tex2 had some interesting comments to make this week regarding the update process for GTA 5 – and we think the implications Rockstar's update schedule could have on any future games is well worth looking into.
"It has been 5 years and 9 months since GTA V's release, [and] Grand Theft Auto Online still receives updates," noted Tex2 over on his Twitter account.
"It doesn't look like R* is planning to stop," he continues. "We could see more after the next DLC." This DLC – for what it's worth – is likely going to be a massive nw patch that introduces the Casino to GTA Online in the coming weeks or months.
Now, Rockstar mentioned back at the time of release that GTA Online support was supposed to end with Import/Export back in December 13, 2016. Thanks to the unprecedented amount of money the game was making, production of DLC continued.
Then, almost exactly a year later, we saw The Doomsday Heist arrive in-game – again, this was touted for a while as being the final DLC pack. Shoot forward another 18 months and we're here… about to see the Casino DLC added to the game, with more (potentially horse-based) content to come.
The good news for Rockstar is that these updates are clearly making them money – or else why would it keep making them? – but the bad news could mean that development resources have been tied up in GTA Online, instead of being pumped into GTA6.
The result? The game could take longer to come out – even if the release date is 2020 and beyond. This is all rampant speculation, of course, but we think it's interesting to see Rockstar continually support a game that is now almost 6 years old…
It's a stark contrast to the likes of EA and Bioware, who are barely supporting a game that's under 6 months old in the form of Anthem. But then again, GTA Online makes money.
Are we going to see a situation where GTA Online from GTA5 and GTA Online from GTA6 run concurrently? It's not beyond the realms of possibility at this point.
GTA 6 – What We Know So Far
