Three girl scouts have been killed after they were hit by a truck while picking up litter.
An adult was also killed and a fourth girl has been critically injured, police said in the US state of Wisconsin on Saturday.
The children had been litter picking in a ditch near Lake Hallie, a town about 95 miles east of Minneapolis when the truck crossed over a lane and into the ditch, hitting the group.
The girls were reported to have been about 10 years old and pupils of an elementary school in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin.
The group had adopted the rural road and performed the community service along it before, something they did while wearing bright yellow safety vests and accompanied by adults.
Two of them and the adult died at the scene, while the third girl died in hospital.
Sergeant Daniel Sokup said the driver, Colton Treu, initially fled the scene in the Ford pickup truck but later turned himself in to police.
The 21-year-old is in custody and is expected to be charged with four counts of homicide through the negligent use of a vehicle, Mr Sokup told the Star-Tribune.
The reason for the crash is not clear and Mr Sokup said Treu had been approaching a hill and there were no blind spots.
