Competing ideas
I think its inevitable that Sony will concentrate more on backwards compatibility with their next console and thats all down to Microsoft. I know theres some truth in the fact that Microsoft had to focus on old games because they didnt have any new ones but they absolutely deserve credit for the way theyve gone about it. They obviously decided that backwards compatibility was something they wanted to make a thing of and they have done it in the best way possible. And now Sony is going to copy it.
This shows how important it is to have competition, as even though Sony are well ahead of Microsoft this gen they realise that could all change next time and, I hope, are trying to do everything they can to counter that.
Its just a shame that the Switch doesnt have a proper backwards compatibility system, as Nintendo was doing very well with the Wii U and Wii. I realise the new Switch tech isnt really suitable but I hope they move on from just NES games soon and have a proper Virtual Console again.

Still full
Im not surprised at all to see Assassins Creed Odyssey do worse than Origins. I dont know what Ubisoft were thinking releasing another game the next year. I thought it wouldve been obvious to them that one of the main reasons why Origins was a big hit was that wed had a bit of a rest from the series and actually started to get hungry for it again.
Assassins Creed should be once every two years tops, and I thin probably less than that. The amount of bugs and repetition is still not good enough really and that wouldnt be an issue if they were just given more time to make it.
I also think that the series is moving to far away from its roots. Im not particularly happy with it being an action role-playing game. And even if the grinding isnt to trick you into making microtransactions I still dont really want to do it. As a fan I will still probably get the game, but only when its cheaper. And it sounds like Im not the only one.

Funny suggestion
I am in total agreement with HighFlyinBrd. Super Mario Party is excellent! I played it on Saturday night with the Mrs (who isnt a gamer) and she and I both loved it.
The mini-games are hilarious and actually some of them are real tests of hand to eye co-ordination. I think if youre a Switch owner you need to have this in your games library for those one-off evenings where you just want to have a laugh.

Lost and confused
The writer of the Hollow Knight Readers Feature took a lot of stick in the Underbox but, while I dont agree with everything he wrote, I must say I also found the game a frustrating experience.
The original Dark Souls and Zelda: Breath Of The Wild are probably my two favourite single-player games of all time, so Im not someone who wants to have his hand held, but Hollow Knight rarely offers even the smallest clue as to where youre supposed to be going next. Fans of the game argue that this is a design choice to create a sense of isolation but, in the five or so hours I played the game, half of that was spent wandering around aimlessly trying to either find the guy that sells the map of each region or trying to work out which of the many possible directions was the right one.
This issue is made all the worse by the fact that much of the game world looks very similar, making it difficult to learn the map. When exploring in Dark Souls, for example, the exquisite layout design means there is no need for a map. Hollow Knights confusing labyrinth simply isnt as easy, or enjoyable, to try to navigate.
Dont get me wrong, there is a lot to admire about Hollow Knight, but too much of my time with it was spent not knowing where to go and often I was quite frankly a bit bored.

Price freeze
Cave Story+ has now been out over a year on Switch and it still hasnt had a price drop. I think I saw it in the sale once but it was only about £2 cheaper.
I was sure this game would drop in price after a while when I read your review last year and Im afraid to buy the hard copy in case it then suddenly drops in price in the eShop! Meh! Rant over.

GC: The non-plus version is much cheaper on 3DS, if that helps.
Publisher preference
For me physical and digital come out about even. Physical has resale value whereas digital has round the clock sales and game sharing.
Id be interested in whats considered the lesser of two evils by publishers/developers though. Rock bottom sale prices that the digital market is heavily based on and puts out the mindset that games should be dirt cheap for many. Or the second-hand market where the publishers/developers dont see any of the resale money but at least punters are paying top dollar from the off. Im guessing its low-priced digital sales.

Alone or not
The game I enjoyed which got poor reviews was Resident Evil 6. It obviously was a bit all over the place and didnt return to survival horror roots but I enjoyed playing it with my brother, especially the early Leon campaign.
Obviously its nowhere near as good as Resident Evil 7, but you cant beat a good couch co-op campaign. If there was a way to play it single-player with the other computer character not being there it could have been a lot better.

At least four
For some reason (probably just the default Ubisoft are bad group think) Watch Dogs got quite a hard time for daring to be not as flashy as pre-release footage suggested it might be, as if no other game has ever been marketed that way.
But wait, it gets worse. The Wii U version was released… *gulps* late and, quite outrageously… (please brace yourself before continuing; if you are pregnant or suffer from any heart conditions seek medical advice before proceeding) … it failed to make use of the potential of the Wii U GamePad! *horrified ghasts*.
Please, take a moment if you need one.
And yet. Being one of the four people that actually bought the Wii U version, I had a great time playing it. It looked great and it played great. There was no other game like it on the Wii U (unless youre going to count Lego City Undercover – dont) and the ability to constantly disrupt the enemy in various ways really improved the basic shooty-shooty formula that you get in these GTA style games. Plus, being able to use Off-TV play on the GamePad meant it was a game I actually completed.
I really wish Watch Dogs 2 would release on the Switch, the system is crying out for such a game.

Nice to see Forza Horizon 4 doing so well in the charts. Totally agree with the other reader saying about how good it and its graphics are. Top game!

Glad to see some people talking out against Read Dead Redemption II at the weekend. Im not really interested in it either, and its almost depressing to think how well its going to do.

This weeks Hot Topic
The subject for this weekends Inbox was suggested by reader Ishi, who asks what is your favourite video game soundtrack?
The game can be from any era or format but were interested in which game had the best overall soundtrack, not just one good song. What is it you like so much about your favourite soundtrack and how well does it work together with the game? How much difference do you think a good soundtrack makes to a game and have any been ruined by a bad one?
Do you own the soundtrack separately and if so how often do you listen to it and other video game music on its own?
