Assassin's Creed: Odyssey - it's got a lot of competition

Crossing the Stream

Ive been reading the games Inbox for quite a few months now, but this is my first time writing in!

I had to write in about my experience with Googles Project Stream. I got accepted for their beta, where I can stream Assassins Creed Odyssey in a Google Chrome tab. I have to say, it is impressive!

My laptop is five years old and cant really play new games anymore (at least not without dropping graphics to low and sounding like its going to explode), but Assassins Creed Odyssey looks great on my laptop with the stream! The frame rate doesnt dip, and theres no input lag. It also should be noted that I live in a medium size city in Florida, and I only have the medium Internet package and am playing in a room across the apartment, so its not like I have a top of the line Internet connection. The only issue Ive had is my resolution drops slightly when my Internet connection dips.

I really think this could be the future of gaming by making PC gaming accessible to people like me who dont have a top-end PC. And on top of that, I get to play Assassins Creed Odyssey for free until January 15! Im personally looking forward to whatever comes next from Googles streaming tech.

GC: Thats very encouraging, especially as weve heard nothing but good things from other people.

The professionals

Have to say, Ive got to add to the praise for Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4. I felt a bit odd pre-ordering it but after really enjoying the Blackout beta I felt I made the right decision and now having the real game Im convinced of it. The multiplayer and Zombies is whatever – the same thing as usual really, competent but nothing new – but Blackout is amazingly well done and addictive.

It just goes to show you how badly made Fortnite and particularly PlayerUnknowns Battlegrounds is compared to Call Of Duty. Big companies might be terrible at trying to rip off players but with this at least you get what you pay for: the talent and experience of Treyarch and the gunplay thats always been Call If Dutys selling point.

Will be interesting to see if Epic Games has any response to this as they used to make Gears Of War so their gunplay should be better than the mediocre stuff youve got in Fortnite. Funnily enough this also makes me more interested in seeing what DICE do with Battlefield V. Not sure if Activision intended for that to happen.

Too much

Ive give up on Assassins Creed Odyssey. Its just too long. I know thats what all the reviews said and there was plenty of warning, but I didnt expect it to be this drawn out. I dont know whether its because of microtransactions – like GC says its ambiguous enough you could argue either way – but its a stupid idea whatever the thinking is behind it.

Its more frustrating because it is a great game despite that. I was playing as Kassandra as well and shes a really great character, even though Im pretty sure the whole idea of a Spartan warrior being a woman is completely made up. The combat and missions are all good, theres lots of variety, but when you realise that youve got another 40 hours, at least, of it ahead of you… I just gave up.

Lifes too short and Red Dead Redemption II is out soon, and I imagine thats not going to be a short one either. If it wasnt microtransactions I really dont know what Ubisoft were thinking with this one.

Take notice

Ive wrote in previously, many times, about my love for Everybodys Gone To The Rapture and this times no different. The soundtrack to this game is absolutely stunning.

To me it plays a crucial part in the game and adds to the emotion and tension in scenes. Much like the characters bringing the story to life the songs also emote for the player and create the necessary atmosphere for each scene/setting. Without this soundtrack I dont think the game would have packed as good a punch. It even won a BAFTA.

Jessica Curry, the composer, also created the Dear Esther soundtrack. Which is a great soundtrack too. Very cold and depressing. Which suited that game perfectly. Not that Rapture is an uplifting soundtrack either but it seems much grander than Dear Esthers due to the use of a choir.

I still listen to the soundtrack as well as play the game regularly too. Both game and soundtrack to me are masterpieces. I never really took notice of soundtracks until this game. Yeah, I know certain classic theme songs from games like Super Mario Bros or Tetris, but I never actively listened to them outside of the games when I was growing up.

GC: On our first read of this we thought you said Everybodys Golf and we were very confused…

Only the start

Ive had my PlayStation VR for a year now and I have to say it has totally rejuvenated my joy for gaming. It really feels like the next evolutionary step and my mind boggles at what we could be gaming on in 10 or 20 years.

So many great games now and it really is a comfortable, well-designed headset that I can happily wear for as long as the wife will allow me to. Keep up the great work GC.

A to B

I have enjoyed many soundtracks to games over the years but my new favourite is Celeste.

Each level has its own unique music that perfectly accompanies the tone of the level and makes the game even better than it already is.

Then you have the B-side remixes which are amazing!

I think good soundtracks are pretty essential in games and films and Celeste hits the nail on the head. It doesnt just have a great theme, it has great themes, for all the levels.

I have found myself listening to the soundtrack whilst doing all kinds of things from washing the dishes to reading a book. Outstanding work!

Mark of generosity

Just a quick message to say I bought and completed Mark Of The Ninja and its DLC on the Xbox 360 when it first came out and absolutely loved it.

I own an Xbox One now and on there it gave me the option to download the remaster for free.

GC: Really? Well that is great. Although we suppose there were so few people that bought it the first time round theyre not really missing out on much revenue.

Free lunch

I have been playing Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4 since it came out on Friday and am enjoying it very much. Whilst I dont feel like the lack of campaign makes the game not worth the price, I would have liked to see a campaign set in this near future setting of 2025 playing as the specialist characters and flesh out the world of Black Ops 4.

However, the trio of standard Call Of Duty multiplayer modes, the new Battle Royale mode Blackout, and three Zombie campaigns. I actually have four because I bought the deluxe version that includes the season pass, or Black Ops Pass as it is called. The Black Ops Pass includes the Zombies campaign Classified as well as Blood Of The Dead, Voyage Of Despair, and IX from the standard game. Ive tried a short go of IX and Classified so far and enjoyed them a lot. I played one solo and the other with people online and found it to be enjoyable either way.

Blackout Im having an absolute blast with, having played lots of matches with friends and solo. I have enjoyed PlayerUnknowns Battlegrounds and while Blackout isnt very different it runs infinitely better and is much more polished. Also, the map design of the areas and each area being a different place makes it feel much more believable, like a real place.

The standard suite of multiplayer modes is also the best I have played in the Call Of Duty series since the first Black Ops game. I prefer the Modern Warfare setting and as this is set just seven years in the future it is much more grounded like the Modern Warfare games and the first Black Ops.

I am excited to play more of each of the modes. I would like to see a campaign in this setting. So, if it is at all salvageable from however long they were in development I think it would be great fan service if it was made available as a free update next year at some point. I think this would be a good way to please fans, although I wont be disappointed if that doesnt happen as, like I say, I feel like the three modes on offer is still a very good package for the money.

This weeks Hot Topic

The subject for this weekends Inbox was suggested by reader msv858, who asks where and how do you buy your video games?

With digital downloads becoming increasingly popular are the majority of your purchases digital or for physical discs and cartridges? If you still buy physically then where do you get them from and how do you make sure you get the best deal? Do you buy second-hand and how often do you resell?

For digital downloads how do you reconcile the high prices when not in a sale? Do you pre-order for either method and if all things are equal which do you prefer: physical or digital?
