The morning Inbox still doesn’t think Sony should be so quick to make the PS5, as one reader admits the corrupting power of video games.

Modern warfare
So the new Call Of Duty really is Black Ops 4, eh? I guess it was pretty obvious even before all the baseball cap hints and whatever. I’m pretty happy with the idea though. I would’ve been upset if it stayed WWII but even more angry if it’d gone sci-fi again, but more or less modern day sounds good. Even if I think some people underestimate just how sci-fi things are getting nowadays in terms of the military.
I think a new Modern Warfare would’ve been the ideal follow-up to the last game, but I guess since it’s Treyarch they can’t do that. Their games have been the best for a long while now though so I’m sure they can keep the new energy from the WWII reboot. I’m pretty sure they know not to include jetpacks and that sort of thing, so it should be fine.
I’ve no idea what they’re going to do about the timeline though, if this takes place before the last one. Are they going to try and make it a prequel or they just going to ignore the third one and assume nobody really cares about the story in these games? I get the feeling that most people don’t but the developers like to think they do. We’ll see I guess, in May by the sounds of it.

Unnecessary roll
I really do not see what the point of releasing a PlayStation 5 in the next two years would be. The current one is still selling really well and everyone seems happy with it. The graphics are great and none of the games seem to have trouble running the way they were intended. So what exactly is to be gained? And before you say money consider that consoles are normally not sold at a profit, so that’s not really a factor.
Sony must realise that a new generation is a very dangerous time, the slate is wiped clean and it’s a new role of the dice. You could go from being top of the industry to the bottom, just ask Nintendo or Microsoft how many times that’s happened. It’d even happened with Sony going from the PlayStation 2 to 3. So why risk losing out when you’re so far ahead?
Microsoft I can understand, for them they’d probably like nothing better than to restart afresh, and if the rumours were about them I could understand it. But for Sony… I’m not saying the rumours aren’t true just that they’re stupid if they are.

New formula
Not too surprised to hear about The Division 2, and funny how the Inbox seemed to call it just at the right time. After playing the original I have no interest in the sequel but I think it’s pretty obvious by now that Ubisoft is going to make almost everything games as a service. So while up till now it’s been open world everything now it’s going to be 10 year lifecycles for everything (except The Division I guess).
Unlike some I don’t have anything against Ubisoft, as I think most of their games are pretty good, but it is so obvious they’re applying a formula to everything they do – with just a few passion projects here and there. First the Ubisoft formula was defined by Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry, now it’s by Rainbow Six Siege and For Honor. It’s still a one size fits all approach and the only good thing is they’re following trends, and trends do change over time.
You can call it cynical but I call it smart. They seem much less exposed than EA or Activision, who are bigger companies but rely almost entirely on just one or two big games. If they start to slip then they’re in serious trouble. If one of Ubisoft’s games fails it’s got half a dozen as back-up, even if they are all quite similar.

Tsunami of news
I love how GC made a joke about games companies getting in a news ‘traffic jam’ and then that’s exactly what happened! And we haven’t even had the Nintendo Direct yet. I realise Ubisoft’s one for The Division 2 was a mistake but even so, what a mess!
Although never mind the Twitter guy, I see Inbox magic has struck yet again as we only had someone the other day asking about The Division 2 and now the same week we get a (sort of) announcement. How’s that for service?
It looks to me pretty obvious that the centrepiece of the Nintendo Direct is going to be Black Ops 4, so I really am not too confident about seeing any brand new Nintendo games. I hope I’m wrong, but it seems not even Nintendo can keep secrets nowadays.

Mario made me do it
I’d like to add my two rupees to this ‘video game causing violence in children’ argument.
Being a full-time plumber is tough and very time consuming, so I don’t have as much time to play as many video games as I’d like to.
But as a kid, I would play video games every single day and I can assure you that my video game addiction had no bearing on the kind of person I that turned out to be.
I’ve only managed to rescue one princess in my lifetime. Her name is Amy and she has been my girlfriend for over a decade now.
My box-breaking, apple-collecting girlfriend maintains that her crash Bandicoot addiction has had no influence on her obsessive-compulsive disorder either.
So there.

The good old days
Just going back to that best ninja game question, to my mind the most iconic ninja game is definitely Shinobi. If Sega were ever to go back to making the style of games they were known for I’ve always thought that Shinobi would be that best way. It’s an action game, with an obvious hook, it’s not cute but it is very obviously Japanese. And with no new Ninja Gaiden for ages it hasn’t really got any obvious competition.
To me that hits all the right notes for nostalgia, a good game, and something that can appeal to people that have never heard of it before.
I know this isn’t exactly new news but if you’d told my young self that the final fate of Sega would be giving up the hardware business and making PC strategy games instead I would’ve laughed in your face. Or more likely cried. I just wonder what all the guys in Japan do while all this goes on. I mean what does Sega of Japan make nowadays, except Yakuza? I can’t imagine but that it must be very depressing for those of them that remember the good old days.

Not a joke
So if the PlayStation 5 dev kits have been sent out now, I guess that means companies can make the current gen game, and next gen remaster of that game, in preparation for a quick release at the same time?
Actually started writing this to be tongue in cheek, but the more I think of it the more I think it wouldn’t surprise me.

GC: In terms of lazy and cynical practices that wouldn’t even be top three for the games industry.

Quite scary
Dead Space – I thought the first game was quite scary. I’m a seasoned horror film fan but I do get scared. Not enough to not play something though! I thought it was dripping with atmosphere. I also loved Dead Space 2 and got the platinum which, as the other reader said, is my proudest platinum and extremely tough. Can’t comment on third game, got it free on PS Plus (wasn’t paying, as it’s EA) and I could not get on with it. Seemed to be about 20fps and felt all wrong somehow!
Bloodborne – no excuse now people as it’s on Plus. I wrote a Reader’s Feature about my experience starting out and how I missed the weapons on the steps at the start. Went on to complete it (I did get help on some bosses) and it was fantastic. Also did the DLC which was great too.
Zelda: Breath Of The Wild – OK, so I liked it but to me it’s nowhere near the perfection and magic of Ocarina Of Time. I even prefer Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword. Breath Of The Wild is good, don’t get me wrong, but the shrines were often too simple in terms of puzzles and the temples were good but quite short. I guess I’m not one for the enormous freedom and far prefer the traditional dungeons of the previous Zeldas. I know I’m in the minority but I’m actually sad it was so successful if it means more Zeldas in that vein. Oh well, we’re all different…
Probably been done before but how about another hot topic on scariest game? I thought Resident Evil 7 was scary early on but for me it was P.T. demo all the way!

GC: We haven’t done one for a while, but that’s probably a Hot Topic best left for nearer Halloween.

I used to like Mario Tennis on N64 too, so here’s hoping the new one Switch is good. I just don’t think they’ll be able to resist shoving it full of gimmick though. It’s what’s held back all the other ones.
Bleeter
That Women’s Day PlayStation 4 theme was pretty good, Sony are always good about these sort of things (they did a Pride Day one as well) but you never see Microsoft doing something like that. I think they’re still stuck playing the ShooterBox card, rather than trying to expand out.
Raddish
This week’s Hot Topic
The subject for this weekend’s Inbox was suggested by reader Tom Meadows, who asks what single game have you put the most hours into?
Some games actually list the number of hours (and days) you’ve played them for, but even if you have to estimate what one would you say you’ve played the most and over what kind of time frame? How did the game hold your attention for so long and do you consider it to be your favourite video game?
Do you tend to play a small number of games for long periods of time or try to play as many as possible and never stay on one for too long? Do you think you were addicted to the game you spent the longest time on, and do you regret playing it for so long?
