The morning Inbox looks imagines a Pokémon game that looks like the movie, as one reader supports his autistic sons love for Smash Bros.

Head start
Completely agree with what a bad idea the Battlefield V stretched release date is. If I buy it on the 20th, its supposed launch date, Ill actually be 12 days behind hardcore fans that paid to have it early. Call me a coward but I have no interest in starting playing a multiplayer game where players (who, by being hardcore are probably already much better than me) have had nearly two weeks practice.
Once again the obscene greed of EA has been their downfall and considering how many other people have said similar things Im expecting Battlefield V to not be anywhere near the success they expect. I wont even bother hoping theyll learn from their mistake because they never do.

The first three months dont count
Is there any way to hold off reviewing Fallout 76, at least for a few months? Not just Fallout but any new games like it, as they dont really seem to be right on release but are polished and improved over the course of several updates and after players report faults.
I dont want you to not report the initial findings, especially if the game is poor and insulting to play but a full review for this type of game should be months in the making. A lot to ask, but I might be one of the people that enjoyed the building and settlement managing of Fallout 4 so I was looking forward to 76 but I guess, going by the previews, it will be a skip from me.
On a similar note, a large mod is coming soon for Fallout 4. Fallout Miami is looking pretty impressive. I would urge people to check out the YouTube page if you want more Fallout single-player.

PS: Not a paid Fallout hype man.
GC: Thats not how reviews work.
Worldwide hit
Amazing to see how popular the Pokémon movie trailer has been, thrashing Toy Story 4 and pretty much guaranteeing itll be a (pocket) monster hit. I really dont know why its taken this long, except maybe waiting for the CGI to get good enough but the thing about Pokémon being a worldwide phenomenon is absolutely true. Everyone from at least age 30 knows what they are probably watch the cartoon/played the game/collected the cards.
Nintendo really need to flex their muscles better when it comes to movies and the world outside of games. Everyone knows who Pikachu and Mario are even if theyve never played a game in their life. But theres hardly any representation for them outside of the gaming world.
Im hoping Detective Pikachu not only is the first good video game movie but also the point at which Nintendo realise just how far their characters travel and how much they could do with them. (Assuming the Sonic movie doesnt come out and ruin video game tie-ins forever).

Rational fear
I just wanted to sing Horizon Zero Dawns praises again now Ive finished it. I enjoyed it so much I actually ended up playing The Frozen Wilds expansion straight afterwards, which is very unusual for me with my massive backlog of other games to choose from. Its been funny reading all the letters about Red Dead Redemption 2s bad combat mechanics/controls and whether it drags the game down or not. Horizon Zero Dawn is the complete opposite in that the exhilarating combat and excellent controls elevates the game to something really special. I think Id prefer it this way round with the gameplay taking precedence over the story/world.
Not that Horizon Zero Dawns story is bad, I actually really liked the backstory with the central apocalyptic premise being very intriguing. Aloy was a likable central protagonist and Lance Reddick was great as Sylens, although the way he says yes at the start of a sentence made me chuckle (he does it about five times in one cut scene). In the end though the most memorable moments in the game came from fighting the menagerie of robots.
The Frostclaws in Frozen Wilds literally throwing their entire body at you in an attempt to crush you really made the blood rush. I have a newfound fear of facing an angry polar bear in real life. Ill be really interested to see what robot animal delights they come up with for the sequel, although I hope they leave it until the next generation now so they can really wow us again.

VR Effect
Just come off three solid hours playing Tetris Effect and it is another cast iron classic, just amazing stuff. As far as Im concerned the reader the other day is dead right: the PlayStation VR is the best hardware of the year and has the best exclusives. It definitely beats the Xbox One at least and to be honest Ive not enjoyed anything as much as Astro Bot, Moss, and this on the Switch or standard PlayStation 4.
Its not just the sense of immersion but of interacting with the games in a totally new way. I mean, Tetris is decades old but it seems brand new now. Not only that but it seems as if it couldnt exist any other way than this now.
And all this is the VR equivalent of being impressed by a NES game. Just imagine what its going to be like next gen, or the gen after? Never mind 8K TVs and all the other nonsense buzzwords, for me VR is the proven future of games. It might take a while to get there but the journey already is amazing.

Not free to play
I totally agree with MSV858. Piracy is wrong and should be taken to task wherever it happens. Some people try to justify it by it saying they are providing a service to gamers, especially retro gamers, by resurrecting old games from the past that have laid dormant and apparently abandoned by those that own the licence.
Thats rubbish, its up to the owner to decide what to do, and if someones out their pirating your game then theres less of a motivation to properly remaster or re-release it yourself.
For comparison, an author writes a book, its published, author earns money for their hard work. A pirate comes along and photocopies it and puts them up for sale, or (more commonly these days) pirates it electronically which allows people to get it free on their e-reader. Author gets no money, is that fair? No, its not.
Games have value for a reason. A talented game developer gets paid for their work, then hopefully will go on to create more games (and support their family). What new games were the Nintendo pirate couple planning to make for us? Absolutely none.
The only thing I must add to your list of things that are free though is Freeview, is also free.

Fake games
RE: msv858. The age old argument in response to your letter, is that games are lost over time this way, whereas emulators and ROMs preserve them at least.
You want to play Banjo-Kazooie or GoldenEye 007? Well, Nintendo cant release remasters or put them on the eShop, due to licensing issues.
You can buy a CRT TV and find a N64 with copy of games, but easier said than done to find working hardware and software, due to age of them.
What about if you want to play a game that Nintendo cant be bothered to release on the eShop, as the work is too much? Theres plenty of those games too, often obscure games, you wont often find working copies of on eBay.
Im not arguing one way or another, just saying, the good fight of Nintendo you portray isnt necessarily so good for gamers.
Kiran
GC: Banjo-Kazooie has been released for both the Xbox 360 and Xbox One. GoldenEye 007 without N64 controllers is nowhere close to the original experience.

On the spectrum
I remember someone writing in maybe a few months ago saying that Smash Bros. is basically a museum tour of whos who in gaming characters, or something like that, rather than being a playable game. They said they never really got on with it but respected it because of the existence of such a thing and the cast of characters. It was positively written. I felt the same about it and I bought all the DLC last time around for the Wii U, even though I felt I never played it enough to warrant the money spent on it. I did really like Cloud, even if Im not into Final Fantasy at all.
I must say I do agree with it to an extent, that its a whos who in gaming rather than a killer game, thats why I remembered the letter. Ive never been that good at it but I can accept its great, especially the music, nostalgia, and the stages.
My child got diagnosed with ASD (autism spectrum disorder) at the start of the year and hes just four years old now. His love for Nintendo characters is unprecedented though, especially Mario Kart and Smash Bros. variations. So whatever he enjoys I push forward for him. Im not sure why hes so obsessed with them, he didnt see me playing them as Id done with those games on the Wii U by the time he would have noticed. But he has had access to a tablet for the last two years, but I havent been on this so Im guessing its through advertising.
Ive bought the pre-order of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate to get the Piranha Plant and Ive got no regrets about it. I even bought another Pro Controller thats the Smash Bros. version, so he feels right at home with it even though he wont play the game himself. lm just hoping he likes something I cant see thats in the sparkle of his eyes.
It might sound like the time Homer Simpson bought Marge a bowling ball with his name on it but its not. I forgot to tell you my child is mute, he doesnt speak to me so I have to watch him a lot and his facial expressions that are such a giveaway. Especially when he belly laughs for no reasons that I can identify with. Im still trying to work it all out.
I remember the lady who wrote in about Overwatch saying there was an autistic person in the cast, it was a good letter that made my ears prick up when I read it.
Im starting to think a lot of autistic people like video games when Im reading around the web. Is there some kind of link between the disorder and the medium? Whatever it is, I find its OK with me. Happy kid is a happy dad.
On a personal level. Cant wait to see if the Shoryuken from Ken is stronger than Luigis uppercut.

Just a quick one to tell you that your archive is still not appearing anywhere (reviews and Inbox letters). Especially annoying as I cant find the evening Inbox anywhere so am confined to only seeing the morning ones!

GC: Were trying to get IT to put it back on the front page but the archive is still there and working the same as ever. There are links on every article – right at the bottom, before the comments. Inboxes also have an extra one about two thirds down. There was no evening Inbox yesterday because we were away at an event, which we warned about at the top of the page.
This weeks Hot Topic
The subject for this weekends Inbox was suggested by reader Gilo, who asks whats your favourite open world game?
With Red Dead Redemption II just out, and games ranging from Zelda: Breath Of The Wild to Assassins Creed Odyssey offering up some of the largest and most interactive worlds ever seen in a video game, we want to know which is your favourite game featuring an open world environment.
What does a good open world add to a game and what do you find are its limitations? How would you like to see this style of game evolve in the future and do you think there are too many at the moment or not enough?
