History was made in front of 10,000 screaming fans at the Ahoy Rotterdam Arena as Europes three most prestigious teams in Fnatic, Origen and G2 took to the stage. It was the latter who claimed the throne as G2 were crowned the first ever champions of the League of Legends European Championship (LEC).
With a new format, shocking results and ridiculous strategies, this was a weekend to remember with plenty to digest before G2 take on the worlds best at MSI.
That being said, here are – in our mind – the five biggest things we learned from the action in Rotterdam.
1. History repeated and records broken
The last time a LoL event was held in Rotterdam, Fnatic took third place while G2 defeated Origen to lift the EU LCS trophy back in 2016. This weekend almost perfectly mirror those events from three years ago as Fnatic had to settle for third following their loss to Origen in the semi-final before G2 overcame Origen once again. The only difference was G2 won 3-0 instead of 3-1.
It was potentially the most one-sided final LoL has ever seen as Origen never even came close to winning a game. The final match finished in just 18 minutes and 31 seconds, breaking the record for the fastest game in European history. And as a result, the entire best of five series finished in just over 74 minutes, crushing the previous record for the fastest final by around half an hour.
Following their first win in Rotterdam, G2 went on to dominate Europe for the next two years and it looks like that part of history could repeat itself too. The teams owner Carlos “Ocelote” Rodriguez summed it up best: “Honestly, the next 20 years are going to be miserable for anyone who isn't a G2 fan because you're going to see us everywhere. Irregardless of what game you play, if that game is relevant we'll have a team and we'll win.”
2. Mithy is one of the greatest European supports of all time
While the final may not have gone his way, Alfonso “Mithy” Aguirre Rodriguez came to Rotterdam with a point to prove and he did himself proud.
Following a difficult year in North America with TSM, Mithy returned to Europe for the 2019 season with Origen and showed once again that he is still one of the best supports in the world. The Spaniard continued his impressive streak as he has qualified for the final of all seven European Splits he has participated in.
And if that wasnt enough, Mithy was also voted the MVP performer for the semi-final as his amazing performances on Blitzcrank and Taric carried Origen against Fnatic.
3. Rekkles shows hes willing to play non-carries, but that doesnt mean he should
Last season, we saw Martin “Rekkles” Larsson take almost an entire Split off as mages and other non-standard picks made it into the bot-lane. The Swede appeared to only feel comfortable on classic ADCs and decided to take a break.
However, the bizarre bot-lane duo of Sona and Taric was too strong for Fnatic to ignore and we sensationally saw Rekkles adopt the off-meta pick in the first game against Origen. It proved a disastrous decision as Origen dominated the opening game with Rekkles failing to make an impact.
Fnatic clearly didnt fully understand the strategy, losing both with and against it. Starting the best of five series with a two-game deficit was too big a mountain to climb. Rekkles looked much more comfortable when he was put on Vayne and proved that he was perhaps right to take a break last season.
4. The G in G2 stands for genius
While Fnatic failed to manage Sona and Taric, G2 adopted the madness and took it to another level. Former mid-laner Luka “Perkz” Perkovic was more than happy to go back to AP champions and his team knew how to perfectly play around him.
But the real fun began in game two as G2 baited Origen into taking the Sona Taric combo while picking the extraordinary composition of Ryze, Morgana, Pyke, Xayah and Rakan.
