Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 LEAK: Next 2019 game is called Call of Duty Modern Warfare (Pic: DS)
The next Call of Duty game due for release later this year was largely expected to be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.
However, recent reports suggest that, actually, it will be titled Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
Initially, this information was brought to light by gamingintel.com. However, in the past information from the website's sources have been pretty hit and miss.
That is until Kotaku news editor Jason Schreier seemingly confirmed the info within the last hour, writing on Twitter:
"I can confirm this is true, and that it's hilarious. The first one was "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare" so obviously the fourth one is "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare." Video games are absurd"
We imagine that most gaming fans will already know this, but for anyone not as plugged into the news sphere, Jason Schreier is rarely wrong on these sorts of scoops.
In fact of all the writers in the industry, it's normally Schreier at the forefront of exclusives and exposes well before official information has come to light.
So as far as confirmation goes for leaks, this is pretty solid.
The decision is certainly strange, although, you can understand how a marketing type might come to this conclusion. A fresh start for a series that hasn't returned to consoles since 2011 and the release of Modern Warfare 3.
That said, spare a thought for the army of parents who aren't as clued up trying to work out what on earth they're meant to be buying when sent to the shops.
A point expertly highlighted by Eurogamer writer Emma Kent:
"Imagine the confusion this Christmas when parents go to buy the fourth Modern Warfare and must correctly pick between Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered"
Following on from his first tweeted response to the news, Jason Schreier went on to seemingly confirm that “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare” is a “soft reboot” of the Modern Warfare series.
Exactly what this means is anyone's guess.
Presumably, it will be modern day, but a reset as far as the games main campaign goes? So not following on from the events of Modern Warfare 3 and the hunt for villian Vladimir Makarov (antagonist of Modern Warfare 2), a Russian terrorist who leads the Russian Ultranationalist party.
Who knows at this point.
