At least nine people have been shot dead outside a bar in Ohio, just hours after 20 people were killed in a shooting at a Walmart in Texas.

A police spokesperson in Ohio said at least 27 people had been taken to local hospitals following the attack in Dayton, with one in a critical condition and two in a "serious condition".

A senior law enforcement official named the suspected gunman as Connor Betts, a 24-year-old white male, US media reported.

The suspect is also dead after being shot by responding police officers.

Dayton mayor Nan Whaley said during a press conference that the unnamed gunman had been wearing body armour at the time of the attack.

He was using a .223-calibre rifle with extra "high-capacity" magazines, she added, but police managed to "neutralise" him in under a minute.

She said: "If Dayton police had not gotten to the shooter in under a minute… hundreds of people in the Oregon district could be dead today."

More from Ohio

Police at the news conference confirmed the gunman had been identified, and said that more details about his identity and possible motive would be released in due course.

Responding to questions over why the name of the gunman had not yet been released, assistant police chief Matt Carper said the investigation into the incident had taken precedence over publicly confirming a name.

Ms Whaley later stressed that the Oregon district was "one of the safest in the region" and that such an attack was rare.

Dayton Police Department had earlier tweeted that officers were patrolling in the immediate vicinity as the attack began and were able to "put an end to it quickly".

The shooting started at 1am local time (6am in the UK) in the city's Oregon district, which is home to a number of bars and restaurants.
