Sniper Elite VR is a fantastic full-fat experience and not an opportunistic VR spin-off (Pic: Rebellion)
Sniper Elite VR was honestly a no-brainer for the talented crew at British game developer Rebellion and after getting some early hands-on time we can tell you this: it does exactly what it says on the tin.
Without even seeing the game in motion, the title alone is enough to conjure up an idea of how Sniper Elite VR plays: a robust shooting gallery for those wanting to channel their inner Nazi-murdering marksman.
However, coming away from this latest entry in the popular series, we were surprised by just how fleshed out Sniper Elite VR felt. Theres a level of depth and polish here, galvanising this as a full-fat chapter in the Sniper Elite saga instead of some rushed out, opportunistic spin-off.
Of course, within moments of the demo starting, we went hunting for an essential Sniper Elite feature: the timeless Nazi X-ray nutshot. Fear not, its here and although it took a few attempts it was immensely satisfying.
It goes without saying that virtual reality lends this sharpshooting series an added layer of immersion which simply wasnt possible in past games. The transition from third-person action game to VR shooter is as seamless as we could have hoped for and even in this early build its polished looks and gameplay really shone through.

As in the mainline Sniper Elite games great shots are rewarded with slo-mo sequences, letting you watch each well-placed bullet travel, piercing skulls, ribcages, and all those lovely mushy organs. Watching these grisly kills in virtual reality is all the more cinematic.
That said, whats just as immersive is having one of Sonys PlayStation VR Aim Controllers in hand – the snazzy, gun-shaped peripheral that launched alongside 2017s Farpoint. Although Sniper will support other device, the Aim makes for a perfect companion and was partly responsible for the games creation.
Youll wield this quite naturally – as if clutching an actual, WW2-era sniper rifle, scouting targets before raising it to your eye as you peer down the scope. Lining up shots was surprisingly fast and fluid, the Aims one-to-one motion tracking coming into play as we chained a good three or four headshots in rapid succession.
Combined with PlayStation VR, the specifically built controller helps transport you to the besieged streets of war-torn Italy. Chuck on a pair of headphones and youll easily find yourself slipping into the world of Sniper Elite. Those wanting even more authenticity can dial up the difficulty for a challenge, introducing more accurate weapon ballistics.
In the level we played we were advancing along a fairly linear path, gunning down Nazis in the streets below. In Sniper Elite VR you have complete freedom over the characters movement instead of remaining static or snapping between designated vantage points.
