When most people think of a PlayStation 4 controller, theyll think of the Dualshock 4 that comes bundled with their console – and thats a fair leap to make. Sonys controller is a huge step up from its predecessor, even with its battery draining light bar and criminally under-utilised touchpad.
If youre looking for something a bit flashier, sturdier, or just plain better, look no further than SCUFs Impact controller for the PlayStation 4 and PC.
Holding the controller in the hand, theres weight to it. Not the kind of weight where you feel you could lose a toe when you drop it, but certainly the kind of heft that suggests itll be durable in the years to come.
The controller itself is actually ever so slightly larger than the standard Dualshock 4, which works out well for those with larger-than-average hands like me.
Our review unit is a two-toned blue with silver buttons and some nice geometric print on the handles. It looks snazzy, but since this is all subjective why not customise your own? The outer shell can be changed in a way not unlike Microsofts Xbox Design Labs, and the colour and pattern options are almost overwhelming.
The rear of the controller is where the real magic lies, and between the exquisitely textured grips, youll find four paddles. These can be used instead of face buttons to be able to do things like jump in a shooter without taking your fingers off the triggers.
Speaking of the triggers, these can be extended to make them easier to hit and more responsive. Unfortunately, this does involve “snapping” off the standard ones and attaching the extended ones, so it could be that through wear and tear these end up losing their tightness.
What is easier is adjusting the triggers to reduce the pressure needed to “fire”. This is done by simply spinning the trigger stop underneath the controller.
Theres also a small pin included that can be used to adjust trigger tension, which will feel like overkill for some while being a welcome addition for those that prefer springier triggers.

Attaching SCUFs patented Electromagnetic Remapping tool to the rear of the controller allows you to remap each paddle within seconds, and quite honestly it feels like magic.
Switching back to the front of the controller, both thumbsticks can be removed with an attachment akin to a locking wheel nut and swapped out for alternative sizes. Unfortunately, there arent any included within the box, these are an optional extra.
