Donald Trump's press secretary and long-term ally Sarah Huckabee Sanders will leave her job at the end of the month.

On Twitter Mr Trump said: "After three and a half years, our wonderful Sarah Huckabee Sanders will be leaving the White House at the end of the month and going home to the Great State of Arkansas.

"She is a very special person with extraordinary talents, who has done an incredible job! I hope she decides to run for Governor of Arkansas – she would be fantastic."

Ms Sanders is widely seen as one of Donald Trump's most trusted lieutenants, and is one of the few remaining in the White House who worked on his campaign.

The 36-year-old, whose father is former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, became a stand-in for Mr Trump on television during his 2016 campaign for the presidency.
