Good grief
Yesterday, I was one of the people that was granted access to Red Dead Online. After a small update (5-6GB) I was making a character and heading off into the online world.
It started off quite good, although the excuse to get you going was a bit odd, but not off-putting to me. Then there was a short tutorial mission followed by some explanation of the mechanics, even though everyone playing yesterday will be able to dream the controls by now. After that I was let loose with very little fuss and I made my way to the closest marker for a mission. Nothing too elaborate (spoiler alert!): hunting a wolf that was terrorising the area.
So I set off, looked around with my Eagle Eye until I had found the track to follow. Suddenly the screen turned grey as I heard a single shot ring out… I had found my first griefer, within the first six hours of the server opening up. After five more deaths at the hand of this person I decided to switch off and read a book instead.
I know that this sort of thing happens all over, but still I go on hoping that sometimes a PvE server will be added so some of us can just get on and play the game.
And I wont go into the semi-racist rant some German player went into yelling at a French player… not showing the very best of the online mentality. Happy gaming!

Maximum cowboy
Was only able to get an hour on Red Dead Online last night but… it pretty much is just GTA Online in the Old West. Im not sure what Rockstar were being so secretive about, but I guess thats just their way nowadays.
Didnt have time to play the Battle Royale mode but everything else worked quite similar to the story mode, with picking up missions from people that are standing around. They all seemed quite simple at first, as youd expect at the beginning, but I was impressed and can see myself spending my time with it a lot.
What I cant imagine doing though is still playing it in three years times, like I do with GTA Online, so I dont know if Rockstar have got a plan for that. The whole low tech weapons thing isnt their fault but it does create a limit to what you can do. And… I dont want to be shouted down over this but after 60 hours on the single-player I think Ive about had my fill of cowboys for a while now.

Coming soon: everything
Once you start writing emails into the GameCentral Inbox it can get quite addictive…
Anyway, noticed a few people writing in on Zelda: Skyward Sword and Switch remakes in general, especially one letter saying Nintendo shouldnt bother and concentrate on new games. Nintendo have previously said that they want the Switch to last longer than the usual console cycle, so it seems likely that nearly every Nintendo game theres ever been will be on the Switch at some point, either through the online service (for say NES, SNES, GBA, and N64), enhanced HD ports (like weve had for Mario Kart), or just emulation.
Exceptions would be kitchen sink sequels like Splatoon 2 or the new Smash, that make previous entries redundant. The Nvidia Shield TV in China has an official Nintendo approved emulated versions of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Super Mario Galaxy. Given it and the Switch are built on the same hardware it feels like Nintendo and Nvidia will be using this as a testing ground to iron out any kinks before rolling out this emulation of GameCube and Wii games on the Switch.
Im all for it as long as theyre budget releases, Id love Galaxy 1 and 2 on Switch but would probably turn my nose up at paying full price for a basic emulation of them.

A fine rumour
Saw some new (not particularly convincing, to be honest) rumours about Rocksteady working on a game called Superman: Worlds Finest today. Just seems to be a variation of the old rumours, except instead of the whole Justice League you play as Superman, Batman, and Robin.
I just dont see it though, not if the only evidence we have of what Rocksteady are doing is that its multiplayer focused and has loot boxes/some kind of games a service economy. I realise that doesnt rule it out, but its not adding up for me.
Making WB Montreal do variants of the Arkham game with different characters sounds more believable and then have Rocksteady do something brand new. Id like to see them create a new IP to be honest, rather than having to work with superheroes all the time. Theyre a great developer but it feels like theyre being held back by being owned by a big company.

I too dont read reviews. Not in the traditional sense anyway. When a new game comes out I watch some gameplay and then I find the GameCentral review and skip straight to the pros and cons. Based on those two factors I make my decision.
The score doesnt really matter to me as weve disagreed on a lot of things and Ive kind of figured out what it is we disagree on. I would of bought Fallout 76 if they had it on Steam, but I dont want another piece of software on my computer. I stop playing EA games and Fortnite because of this. Ubisoft will be next if they get more invasive.

Journey into Christmas
As the sheer undulating horror that is Christmas begins to unravel before my eyes I decided last night to play a game that I havent played for a long time. The ever majestic and beautiful Journey. Even after all the years that have passed since its release I still find it to be arguably the best ¾ hour experience in the history of this medium. I still remember playing it the first time with the same companion, convinced that wed understood the fine nuances of the solitary speech symbol and we were actually conversing.
I remember the times my companion waited for me to catch up or when I did the same. And that final scene when we both ambled along still nattering as we headed into a tranquil oblivion. Then when it ended and I sat in hushed silence at the rather overwhelming emotions such a simple gaming set up brought upon my usually stern heartless self. I had to listen to Meshuggahs Obzen afterwards to force away that watery eye thing you get sometimes when you let your guard down.
After last nights playthrough its still as poignant and beautiful as it ever was and still is a high point in interactive art.

Colour matching
RE: New Aliens game. I assume from the font colour in the Twitter image its Aliens, as that was the colour of the writing for the film title. Isolation was in green, which I think was the same colour for the first film. Very tenuous I know!
However, I cant be the only one hoping for a side-scrolling game in the vein of Alien Vs. Predator by Capcom. That would be awesome!
I would say that surely after all the duds in recent years (the exception being isolation) that we finally get a very well received Aliens game.
WAYNEOS
GC: Youre probably right, especially as theyre describing the game as a shooter and not a horror game. If youre an Alien Vs. Predator fan though we were recently made aware of these cool-looking tie-in toys…

I had a look at a lot of people discussing the PlayStation Classic and while the 20 games included were not the best choices for everyone I would like to raise the subject of the possibility of Sony considering releasing alternate new models of the PlayStation Classic in the near future, which would offer 20 different games, or if possible a wireless network adapter.
Sony could release an online version of the PlayStation Classic in the future and offer people 20 free PlayStation 1 games they could download. It does puzzle me though why Sony has not included online access and why they have not used better emulation software to improve the quality of the games, especially in 2018.
The non-inclusion of the DualShock controller does not help either and while some of the 20 games included did appeal to me I feel that Sony really could have chosen a better choice of games. I am hoping Sony will realise that other 20 game bundles for the PlayStation Classic should be made and to give people who they have letdown with their current choice a reason to get a PlayStation Classic.
Yes, there are things like licensing issues and which developers would agree, but I highly doubt the majority of them would disagree in having one of their best-selling PlayStation 1 games appear on the PlayStation Classic in future versions.
gaz be rotten (gamertag)
GC: We doubt therell be an online version, but we could see them releasing a second console that looks like the PS one and has a DualShock.

Strange that Nintendo would dismiss the idea of Skyward Sword on Switch so quickly. If it was a non-full price remaster I wouldve got it.
Sick Note
I was just looking at the trailer for Rage 2 again and it looks so much better than Fallout 76. I dont mean in terms of gameplay, thats hard to judge and theyre not too similar, but the graphics are on another level – and its open world. How can this happen?

This weeks Hot Topic
The subject for this weekends Inbox was suggested by reader stanley71, who asks what do you think of the current generation of console so far?
The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are five years old this month and both are expected to be superseded by next generation models within the next two years. So what do you think of them so far, in terms of their games, their hardware, and the changes theyve brought to the industry?
If you include the Wii U and Switch as well what do you think of the generation as a whole and is it better or worse than previous ones? How do you think it will be looked back on when all is said and done, and which companies have done the best and worst overall?
