Successful message
I think its perfectly reasonable to ask whether Rockstar has misjudged the marketing for Red Dead Redemption II, Im not sure why some fans are so defensive. Although Im sure itll do extremely well. The question for me is whether itll be the biggest game of the year, given how successful Black Ops 4 seems to be and the long tail itll likely have thanks to Blackout.
Personally I think Red Dead will still beat it and by that point I hope that the point will finally be made and understood that single-player games absolutely can be the biggest games around and as long as theyre good thats never going to change.
Sometimes I think publishers go out of their way to take the wrong message from things though and Im sure once Red Dead Online comes out theyll start pretending it was down to that. But if were being optimistic imagine a next gen where all the big companies started to push their own single-player games again, as responses to the success of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild, God Of War, and Red Dead Redemption II. Now thats a gaming future I can get behind.

Time and money
Nice interview with DICE, as usual, GC. It was all quite interesting but to be honest Id still rather they just didnt bother with the single-player stuff. I could see what they were getting at with Battlefield 1 and they obviously put a lot of effort into it and didnt just go the easy route, but I just felt nothing while I was playing them. The gameplay was never very exciting and basically you always had to make it stealth to try and that just isnt Battlefield.
I think of all the time and money necessary to make these campaigns, and it sounds like Battlefield V is just the same, and I think Id rather just have that spent on the multiplayer.
To me its like wasting all your time and energy on single-player in a fighting game? Whats the point? Who cares? Whatever you do it still doesnt feel anything like the multiplayer and youre basically spending all this time on something thats the opposite of the main game. Not that I want to spoil anyones fun but wouldnt you rather have twice as many maps and other modes instead?

Little and large
Just a quick letter to say that Im currently enjoying playing Black Ops 4, more so than I expected to be fair. Although after a recent switch from PlayStation 4 to PC Im still getting the hang of keyboard and mouse.
Anyway, Im getting off track. My issue is why are the majority of modes 5v5 only? Is there any particular reason for this GC? And no ground war, which again is a strange one. Hopefully they will be added later on. Keep up the good work GC.

GC: Next to Blackout maybe they thought it was better to go to the other extreme in terms of player numbers?

Trading up
I read Helos letter this morning about Assassins Creed Odyssey and I completely agree, except Ive only managed 12 hours and Im bored to tears with it. It doesnt fix any of the problems of the other games, namely idiotic artificial intelligence, game-breaking glitches, terrible voice-acting and its just far too flipping long.
Thankfully, I got an offer from GAME to get a guaranteed £35 back for it when I trade it in before tomorrow, so guess where its going. At least its only cost me £15 in total. Roll on the 26th for Red Dead Redemption II.

GC: Were not going to argue with any of that, except the voice-acting. We can only assume you werent playing as Kassandra?
Pirate discovery
Long-time reader, but this is my first time writing in. Love reading your articles and reviews, top class lunchtime reading. Keep up the great work!
In response to DMRs letter about a mystery game with a red-haired space pirate, I believe they are referring to this trailer for League Of Legends.
FloodofJam
GC: That does sound like the description.
The game DMR was asking about may be Space Channel 5. I am looking forward to the VR version coming out soon, so I can dance along with Ulala and Pudding. Im probably wrong.
MRHBK
GC: Apart from anything Ulala has pink hair.
On the face of it
I agree Ubisoft should steer clear of modern politics and their opinions in games. We get enough of that on Twitter and Facebook, without one side using another entertainment platform to get across their message. Benjydog proved them right with his interpretation of The Division.
Id rather escape the modern world and its opinions than have a message from either side pushed into my game time. And from a business stand point it makes sense, most elections and votes have been pretty divided. In theory you alienate around 50% of your audience by taking a stand on something.
Anthony Daniels
GC: Youre going to escape the modern world by playing The Division? We could understand if you said something fantasy based but the Tom Clancy games, particularly that one, are thick with references to real world modern politics, even if they dont take a stance on them.
Real world problems
Personally I find Ubisofts position on real world politics disgusting. Theyre basically saying that theyre happy to appeal to right-wing neo-nazis and purposefully dont try to confront their evil world view because it might lose them a bit of money. Its that kind of attitude in the media that has led to Trump and Brexit.
Theyre happy to set these games in the real world and fill them with real world politics but they wont actually tackle any of the issues head-on. If you dont want politics in your game go make a Japanese role-player or something.
Even more than loot boxes I find this the most offensive example of immoral capitalism, where you realise that companies are willing to do and sell literally anything for money.

Good omens
Glad to know Dark Souls on the Switch has actually turned out all right. I assume the constant delays and lack of news was a bad omen but sounds like they just needed more time to get it right. Good on them for taking it.
But now that Darks Souls is out on every platform possible, surely its time to start talking about what comes next? Theres Sekiro, sure, but its not a Dark Souls game and to be honest Im not that interested in the setting. Im sure Ill get it, because its a Miyazaki game, but Im eager to know what comes next.
Theres got to be a spiritual sequel to Dark Souls, the sci-fi game he was hinting at a while back? And surely Sony would like him to do a Bloodborne 2? I also wonder whether Bandai Namco would do a Dark Souls IV on their own. As far as I understand they own the rights, so if From dont want to make another game they could get someone else to do it. Thats probably not a good idea but Id be curious to see what they do anyway.

This weeks Hot Topic
The subject for this weekends Inbox was suggested by reader msv858, who asks where and how do you buy your video games?
With digital downloads becoming increasingly popular are the majority of your purchases digital or for physical discs and cartridges? If you still buy physically then where do you get them from and how do you make sure you get the best deal? Do you buy second-hand and how often do you resell?
For digital downloads how do you reconcile the high prices when not in a sale? Do you pre-order for either method and if all things are equal which do you prefer: physical or digital?
