Mark Zuckerberg said on Monday that Facebook is considering the creation of a news product on the social network.

The companys chief executive said that such a service, which would be integrated inside Facebooks platform, would rely on third-party publishers to provide the content and focus on offering its more than 2 billion users trustworthy information.

“We have decided that there really is an opportunity to do something like that with news as well,” Zuckerberg told Mathias Döpfner, chief executive of the German publisher Axel Springer in an hour-long video posted to his Facebook page. Axel Springer is a co-owner of POLITICOs European edition.

Facebooks potential new foray into news marks a significant change of strategy after the company altered its algorithms last year to play down the prominence of news in peoples online feeds. The social network also fell out with several of its media partners that had signed up to Instant Articles, a service to load publishers content quickly onto the site, because of how revenue was shared between both sides.

Zuckerberg, however, said his team is taking a different approach this time, and would look to consult with potential partners worldwide on how to set up the new service, though he did not provide further specifics.
