World of Warcraft Classic – Latest News

Blizzard has announced that World of Warcraft Classic will be making an appearance – in some way – at BlizzCon 2018.

"World of Warcraft Classic is coming to #BlizzCon!" the developer announced in a tweet.

"Try it at home or at BlizzCon when you buy the Virtual Ticket."

The wording seems to suggest a portion of the game will be playable in some manner at the show or at home – if you purchase a Virtual Ticket to the conference.

World of Warcraft Classic – What is it?

World of Warcraft Classic is retro take on the massively popular MMORPG that plans to give players a nostalgia fix from the period the game was the most successful.

Blizzard announced its vanilla server option for World of Warcraft at BlizzCon 2017, though we've not heard much about the project since then.

The goal of Classic is to let players experience World of Warcraft as close as possible to as when it was released. Before work began on World of Warcraft: Classic, it was only possible for players to experience the original World of Warcraft by using private servers, which are illegal and which often have stability or corruption problems. So far, we know that the project heavily relies on community feedback and will be based on patch 1.12 of the original game.

World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth is the upcoming seventh expansion set in the massively multiplayer online role-playing game World of Warcraft.

World of Warcraft Classic – Release Date?

A former World of Warcraft developer has lifted the lid on when he thinks the classic version of the game will be available.

Blizzards former World of Warcraft 3D Level Designer, Jonathan Staats, has explained in a recent interview he thinks the game will be available by 2021.

“If Classic comes out…Im guessing after 2021. MMOs are tough, they take a lot of time and testing”, he noted in an AMA on the ClassicWoW reddit.

It seems like a fairly specific answer… does Staats perhaps know something we don't?

World of Warcraft Classic – Gameplay

It looks like Blizzards vanilla server for World of Warcraft will use original animations from the 2004 version of the game.

As per a job listing on Blizzard's site earlier this year, a Software Engineer (C++) is wanted to modernise legacy animations and character models for modern settings.

“Do you long to travel back to Azeroth before the Mists of Pandaria parted, and before Deathwing broke the world”, the job listing asks.

“When the fog obscured the view into the distance, and weather had just been added? Do you have fond memories of the original character animations, and spell effects? Can you help us restore that look to our modern engine? Then the World of Warcraft Classic Engineering team has an opportunity for you.”

Further duties include: “restoring old models and animations” and re-implementing “old shader behavior”. UI elements are expected to be retro in feel, too.

World of Warcraft Classic – Development

Blizzard has confirmed that whilst the game is still very early in development, it's being developed by a separate team to those that work on the main World of Warcraft title.

Youtube channel Tradechat interviewed the game's director (Ion Hazzikostas), who noted that World of Warcraft Classic is being developed by Blizzard and the community and that this project requires a lot of input from players that know the game very well.

Following that, Youtuber Jessie Cox, conducted an interview with Blizzard at Blizzcon 2018 that discussed the server, where they confirmed that development would work in tandem with the original game and that both servers would run side-by-side.
