The woman who lost control of her car in an accident that killed the daughter and unborn child of Broadway actress Ruthie Ann Miles has been found dead in an apparent suicide.

Dorothy Bruns has died at the age of 44, with police saying that pills and a note were found nearby her body in her home in Staten Island.

A friend found Bruns unconscious and unresponsive in her bedroom on Tuesday, with medical responders pronouncing her dead on the scene.

Bruns was indicted in May by a grand jury and arraigned on charges of manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide and assault.

She faced 15 years in jail if found guilty.

On 5 March, The King And I star Ruthie was walking in Brooklyn with her four-year-old daughter Abigail, her friend Lauren Lew and Lews one-year-old son Joshua when Bruns allegedly ran a red light and struck them.

Abigail and Joshua were both killed in the accident. Ruthie, who was seven months pregnant at the time of the crash, lost her unborn daughter two months later.

A 46-year-old man was also hit by Bruns car and was taken to hospital in a stable condition.

Bruns allegedly suffered a seizure at the time of the collision, with prosecutors claiming that she had been told by doctors less than two months prior not to drive due to her medical issues.

The New York Police Department are investigating Bruns death.

In May, the Miles family lawyer confirmed that Ruthie, 35, and her husband Jonathan Blumenstein had lost their unborn baby.

Ben Rubinowitz said: At the time of the crash Ruthie was pregnant and was severely injured. This past Friday Ruthie and Jonathan lost their baby, Sophia Rosemary Wong Blumenstein.

The pain suffered by Ruthie and Jonathan is nearly impossible to fathom.
