Most photos chosen to celebrate a birthday would be of memorable moments, times with family or friends.

So the US first lady could perhaps be forgiven for being a bit disappointed with the photo chosen by White House staff to mark her big day.

Melania Trump, who has turned 49, was shown looking flawless but slightly grumpy while sitting on a sofa in the Oval Office.

She is surrounded by reporters and photographers but none are focused on her, looking either at their cameras or at something beyond her.

Neither her husband nor her son Barron are with her and she looks very much alone.

The photo was taken in March during a meeting between the president and Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis.

The White House posted it on social media with a simple: "Happy birthday Flotus (first lady of the US)".

Many users commented on her beauty and poise, but her expression and the photo's composition left some people on Twitter confused.

One wrote: "She's never looked happier."

Another said the photo was "deeply weird", while another appeared to refer to Donald Trump, posting: "Did he forget again?".
