Killing Eve star Jodie Comer was one of the British stars to win a coveted award at last nights Emmys 2019 ceremony and the actress, who plays Villanelle in the award-winning BBC series, made an emotional acceptance speech when she took to the stage to receive her trophy.

Jodie, who is 26-years old, is best known for her role as Russian assassin Oksana Astankova (aka Villanelle) but she has also starred in other British dramas including Doctor Foster and Thirteen.

Jodie has impressed fans with her turn as Villanelle – not least because of her ability to pull off so many different accents over the course of the series – so some fans may have been surprised watching the stars Emmys acceptance speech to hear her real accent.

Jodie Marie Comer was born in 1993 in Liverpool, England and still has the distinctive regional accent of her hometown.

The Liverpudlian actress began her career appearing in an episode of The Royal Today – a spin-off of the medical drama series The Royal – back in 2008, before landing a leading role in five-episode drama series Justice in 2011 as character Sharna Mulhearne.

Jodie first appeared on our screens as Villanelle, the Russian killer with a penchant for fashion and dressing up, in 2018.

What did she say in her Emmys acceptance speech?

The popular and multi-talented actress took to the Emmys 2019 stage last night to deliver an emotional acceptance speech on being awarded the prize for Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

The star was visibly shocked when she approached the mic, opening her speech by saying: I was not expecting to get up on this stage tonight at all.

Jodie beat her Killing Eve co-star, Sandra Oh, who was also nominated and had been a favourite to win the category.

Before starting her long list of thank yous, Jodie cried, Phoebe, I love you!, directed at fellow British star Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who wrote Killing Eve for TV and is also a friend of Comers.

I cannot believe I am in a category alongside these women, Jodie continued, one of which is my co-star Sandra Oh.
