CNNs Van Jones made an effort to goad Waffle House shooting hero James Shaw Jr. into attacking President Donald Trump on Friday, pointing out the fact that Trump had reached out to Kanye West and not him. Shaw brushed the criticism aside, saying he knew how busy Trump must be.

Jones kicked off the segment by asking Shaw whether or not he had heard from the president. Shaw said that he hadnt, but that he couldnt say for certain whether or not the White House had attempted to make contact. “I havent heard anything, but thats not to say he didnt try to contact me, or not.”

Jones then took things a step further, saying, “he gave a shout out to Kanye today. How do you feel when the President of the United States missed an opportunity to hold up somebody whos trying to do good stuff like you?”

But Shaw didnt take the bait by attacking Trump, and instead said, “I know he has a busy agenda, a busy schedule. Maybe he just hasnt got around to me. Maybe my time is coming. Its not for me to judge what he does. I did what I did and I didnt really do it for recognition, just to save my life honestly.”

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders noted earlier in the week that the president would like to invite Shaw to the White House, but that has not yet been arranged.
