Many were shocked and dismayed at the news that Stephen Fry has been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

The legendary entertainer revealed he has been battling the disease for the last twelve months.

Fry, 60, has been one of Britain’s most beloved performers for decades.

There are few who will not have seen him on their TV, read his books or heard his distinctive voice on the popular Harry Potter audiobook series.

Born in Hampstead, London, Fry got his start in the entertainment industry while a student at Cambridge where he joined amateur theatrical company the Footlights where he met Hugh Laurie and Emma Thompson.

He and Laurie established themselves as a comedy duo in the 1980s, appearing on several TV programmes before landing their own sketch show, A Bit Of Fry & Laurie.

The Londonder expanded his repertoire by appearing in a number of dramatic productions as well, many of them BBC adaptations of plays and books like The Common Pursuit and In The Red.

In 2003, he began hosting the game show QI, helping it to become the most viewed show on BBC Four before he departed in 2016.

A jack of all trades, Fry always had other projects on the go throughout his varied career.

He has appeared in several documentaries and factual programmes. His first, Stephen Fry: The Secret Life of a Manic Depressive, aired in 2006 and won an Emmy Award.

It explored the comedian’s struggles with a mild form of bipolar disorder, cyclothymia.

He also hosted Stephen Fry: In America in 2008 which saw him travel to all 50 US states and Stephen Fry: Out There in 2013, which explored various attitudes towards homosexuality in various parts of the world.

Fry has had numerous roles on stage throughout his career. The first play he wrote, Latin! or Tobacco and Boys won the Fringe First Prize at the Edinburgh Festival in 1980 and he has also authored three novels.

His wit has made him an in-demand host and Fry has hosted the Bafta awards an impressive 12 times, his most recent turn being in 2017.

Fry, who was previously in a 15-year relationship with Daniel Cohen until 2010, married comedian Elliott Spencer, 30, in 2015.

The pair are thought to have been dating for a year before they tied the knot, with Spencer accompanying Fry to various events throughout 2014.

The marriage made headlines after it was announced, due to their 30-year age difference.
