Skate 4 Game News: release date rumours and updates for long requested PS4, Xbox EA game

Skateboarding games were massively in vogue in the 90s – in the PSOne era, that titles excelled and were some of the best-selling titles of the hardware generation.

Then we moved onto the PS2/Xbox era, and whilst there certainly were some great games, the bubble had started to burst a little and developers veered to more madcap titles to remain relevant as the popularity of Jackass and Viva la Bam took over.

Enter the 360/PS3 era, and despite the best efforts of fans and developers, the time for skating games was at an end.

Only Skate was left to carry the torch, and the series died a little way into development.

Now, though, rumours of Skate 4 abound – and the world waits with baited breath. Here's what we know so far.

Skate 4 – What we know so far

Skate 4's teases have been… weird.

First up, on June 4, EA decided to reactivate Skate 3's online servers for, apparently, no good reason. EA didn't mention the game at E3, nor has it mentioned the series since. Curious indeed.

EA has also made Skate 3 backwards compatible on Xbox One – surely an acknowledgement of the series' continued popularity.

Further back, in January 2017, Daniel Lingen, a community engagement executive for EA, tweeted “#skate4” from his personal account. No explanation was offered. At an earnings call in February, EA noted it wasn't making Skate 4 'presently'. A specific choice of words, right?

Other than that, nothing concrete exists regarding the game, but there are many, many fans around the world calling for EA to bring the series back – including a fan petition to, um, 'Make EA Skate Again'. No, really.

Skate 4 – Demand

Skate 4 is in high demand from gamers and developers, it would seem.

In July 2018, Games Radar ran a piece that highlighted even the developers of new Skate-like title Session were would like to see the title come back… even if it would run in pretty direct competition to their own product.

“When we saw the EA press conference, and Skate 4 was a no show… yeah, we have to admit it was quite a relief,” notes Marc-Andre Houde, creā-ture Studios co-founder int he interview.

“We were the only people who were actively hoping for Skate 4 not to show up! A part of me would want a new Skate game, sure, but another part of me definitely doesnt!”

Let's hope EA doesn't take the wind out of Session's sales before the developer has a chance to really show its take on the genre off…
