A new compilation of 16-bit classics will be released in just a couple of months, as Sega accidently leaks its own announcement.
There’s going to be a point in time where Sega has spent more time specialising in PC strategy games than they have making arcade and console games. It won’t be for while yet, given how long Sega has been around as a company, but its inevitability is quietly depressing.
So to cheer you up Sega has announced a new Mega Drive compilation. And by announced we mean accidently posted the trailer early and then deleted it from their Twitter account.
But the Internet never forgets, and so plenty of fans were around to save a copy and repost it. Although the video below is the American version, since it goes by the name of Sega Genesis Classics.
Presumably that means it’ll be called Sega Mega Drive Classics in the rest of the world, and that the May 29 release date isn’t necessarily going to be the same for everyone.
Because it’s a leak there’s no official description, but the trailer clearly shows Sonic The Hedgehog (obviously), Streets Of Rage, Golden Axe, Space Harrier, Gunstar Heroes, ToeJam & Earl, The Revenge Of Shinobi, and Altered Beast.
The usuals then, but peculiarly the collection is only being released on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC, with no mention of a Switch version.
Unfortunately, that implies a low effort release using existing ports, that Sega couldn’t be bothered to get working on the Switch (or maybe they’re saving them for the Virtual Console?).
The last major Mega Drive compilation was the Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, which contained almost 50 games. So let’s hope this new one is at least as generous.
