Ring Fit Adventure – WARNING: trailer may contain Americans

Nintendo has revealed a new adventure game and controller where you defeat enemies with the power of squats.

When Nintendo first teased a new controller for the Switch many guessed that it was for some kind of keep fit game, probably a cross between Wii Fit and Wii Sports.

Ring Fit Adventure is a bit more involved than that though, while also requiring a lot of physical exercise.

The new controller is called, rather ill-advisedly, the Ring-Con and works like a Pilates resistance ring, where you can squeeze the ring together, using the body parts of your choice, to improve your muscles – and control the game.

Ring Fit Adventure seems to be a mix of keep fit game and action role-player, where you move along by jogging on the spot – as detected by the Leg-Strap that has one of the Switchs Joy-Cons in it.

The Ring-Con has the other and allows you to aim down to jump and shoot blasts of air by squeezing it. You can also fly, pretend to use a paddle board, and roll along on a sort of train cart, while still using the Ring-Con to steer and balance.

When you meet enemies though you can only defeat them by performing one of 40 exercise moves, organised into four categories for arms, core muscles, legs, and yoga moves. Plus, you can squeeze the Ring-Con against your abs to act as a shield.

Its easy to scoff but it actually seems a pretty good way to get people interested in taking exercise and the difficultly will apparently calibrate to your current level of fitness.

You can also access all the exercises separately and the game will measure things like calories burned and your heart rate – if you want to treat it like a series keep fit tool.

Although if it was a game about doing bodily harm to the trailer presenters wed be even more interested. But, thankfully, theyre only in the video.

Ring Fit Adventure is out on 18 October, although theres no indication of a price yet.
