Two people have fallen 10m from a derailed roller coaster ride in Daytona, Florida.

Six riders were taken to hospital after 10 people were rescued from the dangling roller coaster on Thursday evening.

Three cars on the ride at the Daytona Beach Boardwalk came off their tracks at around 8.30pm, according to the Daytona Beach Fire Department.

Firefighters fought to save the riders trapped in the ride as it hung from the tracks.

According to the Fire Department's Twitter account, two riders fell to the ground from the ride.

It says a total of 10 riders were rescued and the extent of their injuries wasn't immediately known.

A photo from the scene shows a woman being treated by paramedics next to an ambulance and wearing a neck brace.

Videos of a rescue crane being used to reach the passengers trapped in the perilous situation were posted on Twitter by the fire department.

In one film, what appears to be one of the riders crawling along the crane with the help of two emergency workers can be seen.

Another video shows what appear to be rescuers climbing up the frame of the roller coaster to try to reach those trapped inside.

The helpers in the clip are dressed in casual clothes, rather than in the uniform of the emergency services, suggesting they could be passers-by.
