Legally Blonde 3 is officially a go, and star Reese Witherspoon confirmed the news in true Elle Woods style.

The actress and director shared a video of herself floating in a pool in a sparkling bikini on social media, an allusion to Woods' video essay for Harvard.

The Instagram caption confirmed recent reports that a third movie is in the works. "It's true," Witherspoon wrote, adding "#LegallyBlonde3."

Studio MGM later announced that the movie will open in cinemas on February 14, 2020.

It has been almost two decades since the debut film became a surprise hit, sparking a franchise that's generated multiple movies, a reality series and a Tony-nominated Broadway musical.

Witherspoon's Elle set her sights on law school after being dumped by her beau in the first Legally Blonde released in 2001. The film, directed by Aussie Robert Luketic, grossed over $US140 million.

For the 2003 sequel, Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde, Elle headed to Washington with hopes of banning animal testing.

What will the third Legally Blonde installment bring? Witherspoon contemplated where her character would be on an episode of Fashionably Late with Rachel Zoe in 2015.

Then, amidst buzz of Hillary Clinton's presidential run, Witherspoon thought the climate was right for a film that followed Elle's political ambitions.

"I actually think it's kind of great right now because we're talking about women in politics and how important that is to get more women," she said at the time. "And I think it'd be kind of a cool thing to have her be a Supreme Court Justice or somebody who runs for office, like president."
