Pushy sales people, broken cars and long waits at the airport – renting cars can often be an arduous task.

But the very worst firms to get a car from have been revealed in research released today.

Consumer watchdog Which? asked consumers for their opinions on a number of rental companies to compile a list of the most and least reliable firms.

They asked questions about hidden charges, the condition of the car, and value for money.

New company InterRent came out bottom of the pack, with just 31 per cent customer satisfaction.

Unhappy motorists were left disappointed by filthy vehicles, lengthy queues, pressure selling and unexpected charges.

Though the company is one of the cheapest to get a car from, with an average cost of £21 a day, one customer told Which?: "I feel like I got what I paid for."

InterRent knocked Spanish company Goldcar off the bottom after a five year stint as Which?'s worst car provider.

GoldCar didn't fare much better in the 2018 survey, as it got slapped with a 42 per cent customer satisfaction rating.

Europcar came out with a respectable score of 63 per cent.

Auto Reisen topped the table for a fifth year in a row with a 96 per cent customer satisfaction score.

The company only operates on the Canary Islands, and was praised by customers for good customer service, all inclusive prices and good quality cars.

Enterprise was found to be the highest rated worldwide firm with a score of 78 per cent, boasting full marks for customer service.

Rory Boland, Which? Travel Editor said:

While we certainly dont need another shoddy operator in an industry already plagued by unscrupulous practices, InterRents poor rating shows why it is more important than ever to vet your car hire company.

Providing customers with good value, clear pricing and hassle free car rental should be standard, so we are happy to see firms like Auto Reisen and Enterprise showing their rivals how its done.
