Sony has revealed the December games line-up for PlayStation Plus.

It's a pretty good month with a varied mix of games on offer for December, with SOMA, OnRush, Steredenn, Steins;Gate, Iconoclasts and Papers, Please all up for grabs.

But are the games on offer from Sony as part of the free download scheme actually any good this month?

After how popular our round-up of the PlayStation Plus November lineup proved to be, we have decided to let you know just how impressive this week's set of games looks set to be.

Onrush:

Onrush is an arcade racer that tasks players with racing, smashing and taking down your opponents in a break from the norm action/arcade racing. Dare to be reckless and win at all costs as you enter into the world's most celebrated and globally streamed, extreme sport.

The game has a 76 Metacritic score – which is certainly lower than some racing games we've seen this year, but still not a bad rating by any standard.

"Codemasters has at least put together a great foundation on which to build. Theyve promised that as well as that ranked mode, new content and features will roll out to players going forward and if they make the right steps, Onrush could end up being an absolutely huge deal. At launch though, it serves as a great taste of what could be, even if it could go with just a little bit more fuel in the tank," notes PlayStation LifeStyle.

"OnRush is an exhilarating, old-school arcade racer… with both its feet firmly planted in the new "online multiplayer" millennium. It needs more depth in its class system and more modes, but it's fun as hell," says IGN Italia.

However, JeuxVideo is less enthusiastic, saying: "Onrush looks like a racing game, plays almost like a racing game and feels like a racing game. But its not a racing game. Its more of a MOBA game, and this is a cool concept, but it simply doesnt really work."

SOMA:

SOMA, originally released back in 2015, is a science fiction survival horror video game developed and published by Frictional Games for Microsoft Windows, OS X, Linux, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

The game sits at 79 on Metacritic – a pretty high score for a cerebral horror title.

"Almost five years of work well done in this playable nightmare," says LaPS4. "Frictional opens our eyes with this FPS survival horror. SOMA is conservative in all that Amnesia imposed, but it has new and great ideas and atmosphere so the player wants to cross each new door. Welcome to the depths… of your fear."

"In a spectacularly immersive setting supported by masterful sound design, SOMA is solid evidence that the Friction Games is still in total control when it comes to horror," says GodIsAGeek.

And TheSixthAxis notes: "It makes you think about what it means to be alive, and indeed how you classify life, and is a brilliant example of just how far video games have evolved."

Those are the main two PS4 games you need to be concerned about, but out of interest for anyone looking into the other titles, we thought we'd do a quick summary on what you can expect from them.

Steredenn (PS3): 79 Metacritic – "Steredenn is a frenetic and chaotic space shooter, carved in big beautiful pixels, with insane boss battles."

Steins;Gate (PS3): 83 Metacritic – "A rare chance to play a thoroughbred visual novel, with a multi-layered plot that explores everything from Japanese pop culture to the ripple effect of everyday decisions."

Iconoclasts (PSVITA + PS4): 83 Metacritic – "This is a perfect weekend game: cheerful, fun, challenging but not too demanding. It successfully recreates the atmosphere and sense of adventure of the 90s 2D action-adventures that inspired it, and occasionally betters them."

Papers, Please (PS Vita): 92 Metacritic – "The concept may sound absurd but the experience of playing Papers, Please shines a light not on the games hapless victims but on the players own sense of decency."
