Plants Vs. Zombies: Battle For Neighborville – official at last

The spiritual sequel to Garden Warfare is out next month but you can play it today if you buy the already available Founders Edition.

As if always releasing games at the same time wasnt bad enough, companies have now taken to announcing them at the same time too – with the news of the new Plants Vs. Zombies online shooter almost getting lost in all the fallout from last nights Nintendo Direct.

The reveal was also undercut by the fact that details about the game have leaked out several times already, but theres still reason to be excited as the previous Garden Warfare games were actually very good games.

There was also still time for a surprising revelation: that the game will be out as early as 18 October, on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

The obvious question is why isnt it just called Garden Warfare 3, especially given the new subtitle is so rubbish, but it seems the structure is quite different to the previous with a large open world environment that includes social hubs, free-roam areas, and all the different multiplayer modes – such as the Thunderdome region which has two teams of 12 fighting against each other.

You can play any of the modes co-operatively with a friend, including in local split-screen for some good old-fashioned couch co-op.

The most unusual aspect of the game though is that you can play an early version of it right now by becoming a Founding Neighbor (these American spellings are making our teeth curl) and buying the Founders Edition.

Each week, for six weeks, new content will be added to the game until everything is complete, ready for the mid-October official launch.
