Piers and Sophie joined the debating club on Wednesday

Piers Morgan and Sophie Turner have gone head to head on social media this evening, after Piers supported Corrie star Beverley Callard after she voiced her fears celebrities were trying to make mental illness fashionable.

Piers is one to stir up a little controversy, sure, and unfortunately many take the bait. As they did tonight.

And it was Sophies turn to speak out against the Good Morning Britain presenter as she shared her own theory as to why her famous chums have chosen to air their issues.

Or maybe they have a platform to speak out about it and help get rid of the stigma of mental illness which affects 1 in 4 people in UK per year, she fumed.

But please go ahead and shun them back into silence.

She then ended the message by calling Piers a twat.

Piers put on his trolling hat and replied to the Game Of Thrones actress, as he wrote: Hi Sophie, please dont abuse me like this – its harmful to my mental health. Thanks.

This is why we cant have nice things, guys.

Earlier on Piers had retweeted a story that covered an interview with actress Beverley, who shared her belief some stars were trying to make mental health problems fashionable.

Piers Tweeted: Shell be hammered for saying this, but its 100% true.

Immediately he faced fierce debate as many disagreed with his sentiment.

He didnt back down, as per, as he replied to one who suggested he invite these celebrities onto GMB and address it with them directly: Sadly, I know a lot of well-known people (not The Rock) whove jumped on the “victimhood” bandwagon to get positive publicity for themselves.

They do those with genuine mental illness a great disservice.

The presenter continued in another thread: ”Victimhood” is a modern scourge, driven by some unscrupulous celebrities, in which people attach themselves to various fashionable ailments to get publicity & commercial/career benefit. I see right through them.

He was responding to an interview with Beverly in Best Magazine, where she felt there was a danger mental illness would become fashionable.

Real mental illness is very dark and it takes a great deal of strength to ask for help, she said.

I think we are now definitely chipping away at the stigma.

But we have to be careful mental illness doesnt become like a Gucci handbag.
