Police in New York met with Pete Davidson after he wrote, and later deleted, an Instagram post in which he said he didnt want to be on this earth anymore.

Now a spokesperson for the New York Police Department (NYPD) confirmed that officers met with the comedian for a wellness check following the message on his social media account.

It all started after the Saturday Night Live comedian wrote about the importance of supporting those with mental health issues, and commending Kanye West for speaking openly about it on Twitter.

However, he followed it up with a second note.

I really dont want to be on this earth anymore, he said. Im doing my best to stay here for you but I actually dont know how much longer I can last. All Ive ever tried to do was help people. Just remember I told you so.

This prompted a police check, according to Cosmopolitan, even though it is unclear who the message was meant for.

In a since-deleted tweeted by Ariana Grande, Petes former fiancé, it appears the star visited Pete, as she wrote: Im downstairs and Im not going anywhere if you need anyone or anything. I know you have everyone you need and thats not me, but Im here too.

Kanye had tweeted for hours on a variety of topics, one of which was mental health. He admitted that he had experienced first hand how people who have mental health issues get written off by society.

Ariana wrote a tweet which many took as a reference to Kanye, in which she said people shouldnt weaponise mental health.

Following the tweet, Pete fired off a message of his own on Instagram: Bravo Kanye West for standing up for yourself and speaking out against mental health. I cant explain to you enough how difficult and scary it is to be honest about stuff like this.

We need people like Kanye. No one should ever point fingers at you for your bravery in speaking about mental health. Im seriously disgusted.

In another deleted Tweet, Ariana wrote: Man Im so sorry I told a dumb joke. I really didnt mean any harm. All I want is for everyone to be healthy and happy, so desperately, please my god.

Following the police check, Pete went in to work at SNL though in a limited capacity, as it was reported that he missed dress rehearsal.
