Captain Marvel took off into space Monday night, delivering knock-down punches and lots of adrenaline-fueled action in the characters first starring film this coming March. We learn a bit more about her backstory, and get more hints about the mysterious character Jude Law plays in the film.

Fans have been eagerly awaiting Captain Marvel's big screen debut, not least because it seems likely she'll play some role in the upcoming (as yet untitled) Avengers 4 movie. When the first trailer dropped in September, it confirmed that Captain Marvel will be set in the 1990s, long before the infamous "Snappening" at the end Avengers: Infinity War. She falls from the sky and lands in a Blockbuster video, and soon draws the attention of a young Nick Fury (all hail the power of CGI).

There were hints that Carol Danvers once had a life on Earth. We learn a bit more about that in the new trailer. Carole Danvers was rescued near death by the Kree after her aircraft crashed, with no memories, and they made her one of them, "so you could live longer, stronger, superior." Something in her past will turn out to be the key to fending off an alien war.

We also get another brief look at Law's character. It's been widely rumored that he plays the original Mar-Vell, introduced in the comics back in 1967 as an alien military officer of the Kree Empire who joins forces with the humans. Fans speculated he would play Carole Danvers' mentor in the new film.

But last week leaked images of the new line of Captain Marvel Funko Pop toys indicated that Law instead will play a Kree named Yon-Rogg, one of Captain Marvels greatest enemies. The new trailer appears to back that up, since he is far more confrontational towards Carol than in the prior trailer. "You've come a long way," he tells her. "But you're not as strong as you think."

And remember that seemingly sweet old lady on the bus that Captain Marvel smacked across the face? She turns out to be a Skrull in disguise—a member of an evil alien race capable of shapeshifting. So the old lady deserved that beatdown.

Captain Marvel will hit theaters on March 8, 2019.
