A Las Vegas mother has been arrested after the body of her three-year-old daughter was found in a duffel bag.

Dejah Hunt had been reported missing before she was discovered inside the bag in a closet last Thursday.

Her mother, Aisha Yvonne Thomas, told detectives during her arrest that the girl fell unconscious early that morning after she hit her in the head for wetting herself.

The child's father, Don Edward Jr, was in jail at the time.

It is understood the 30-year-old was arrested on a state violation permit based on a domestic violence warrant linked to the same apartment.

Police said that when Thomas reported her daughter missing she claimed Dejah "wandered off" while they walked to a shop.

The girl was not found during an initial search of the home, but when officers called in more resources Dejah's body was discovered.

Thomas is in prison pending a hearing on 1 October, during which it will be decided if she will stand trial for murder.
