Capcoms monster-sized hit is to get its first major expansion, with new areas, new monsters, a new rank, and… Geralt of Rivia?

DoomHow Doom changed my life and my love for video games

After years of trying, Monster Hunter finally became a mainstream hit in the West this year and as youd expect Capcom are doing their best to keep it that way.

Iceborn is the games first big expansion but its been designed as the equivalent of the series traditional G or Ultimate editions. These are normally released as standalone games but this time itll be a regular paid-for expansion to Monster Hunter: World.

The expansion will introduce new monsters (Nargacuga has already been hinted at) as well as new areas of the game world (primarily icy environments, as youd imagine from the name), a continuation of the story campaign, and a new quest rank (probably G Rank, or at least an equivalent).

The only snag is that Iceborn wont be out until next autumn, which means fans are going to have to endure a long wait for more content.

Or perhaps not… long before Iceborn arrives Geralt from The Witcher 3 will be putting in an appearance in the game, complete with voiceovers by regular voice actor Doug Cockle.

Or at least hes definitely doing the English language version. Therell also be the option to have Geralt talk the Monster Hunter language, if thats how you prefer to play things.

Whether Geralt will be bringing any Witcher monsters with him is unclear, but there are changes to the gameplay promised – to reflect the more complex role-playing elements of The Witcher 3.

Geralt will be turning up on January 3, but before that the Arch-Tempered form of Kulve Taroth will be returning to the game between December 19 and January 3.

That will be the penultimate Arch-Tempered variant, before the Nergigante in the spring, which will signify the end of the games initial wave of additional free content.

Iceborn will carry the baton after that, which implies it may be a year or so before we hear about any kind of full-blown sequel.

In the meantime, you can try a free trial version of Monster Hunter: World, that lets you play the whole game up to rank 4, from Wednesday, December 12 until Monday, December 17.
