Metro Exodus – part of a very busy spring

4A Games much-anticipated first person shooter is going to be out even sooner than expected, but its up against some stiff competition.

Ashen (XO) - relatively dark soulsGame review: Ashen is a (slightly) friendlier Dark Souls

Its a little known fact that it is illegal for any video games publisher to own a calendar or look up the release dates of other games. Or at least we assume thats the case, because there doesnt seem to be any other explanation for why release schedules are always such a dogs dinner.

Metro Exodus has looked great every time weve seen it, most recently back at Gamescom. To describe it as just a shooter is to do it a disservice as its also got elements of open world exploration, stealth, horror, and role-playing.

Set in a post-apocalyptic Russia, it sees you play the part of a survivor on a train trying to make its way east over the period of a year.

The good news is that its now gone gold, which means its completely finished. The bad news is its being released a week early.

The reason thats bad news is that February 15 is the exact same day that Far Cry: New Dawn and Crackdown 3 (and Dead Or Alive 6) are also released. Far Cry in particular is not a million miles away from Metro Exodus and its hard not to worry that the games going to get edged out by its more famous rival.

Metro Exodus was previously planned for release on February 22, the same day as Anthem, so maybe they felt they were getting out of the way of that – although BioWares online shooter is certainly less similar to Exodus than Far Cry is.

To be fair, it is an exceptionally busy spring, with Resident Evil 2 out on January 25, Kingdom Hearts III on January 29, and Ace Combat 7 on February 1.

The week after February 22 is clear, but then a week after that youre into Devil May Cry 5, followed by The Division 2, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Mortal Kombat 11, Days Gone, and Rage 2 in mid-May.

Its great for gamers looking forward to new games but not for publishers looks for a spare place in the schedules to release their new game.
